Leona M. Ackley, 90, of Oneonta, died at home on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, after
a lengthy illness.
She was born June 28, 1913, in Meredith, the daughter of Erwin and Ida (Peck)
Johnson.
She married Harry C. Ackley on July 16, 1936, in Meridale.
Leona was valedictorian of her high school in Treadwell. She graduated from Oneonta
Normal School and became a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse and then in Treadwell.
She later went back to school at the State University in Oneonta. She then taught
for 20 years in Harpursville.
Leona worked as a polling adviser for the First Ward at Valleyview School, for
the Board of Elections for more than 15 years. She enjoyed working as a volunteer
at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital on weekends, while still teaching and then through
the week after her retirement in 1977 until 1990. She was a member of NEA. She
attended the Red Door Presbyterian Church in Oneonta. She loved working in her
garden, traveling with friends, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by one son, Roger and his wife, Carol, of Oneonta; five grandchildren,
Roger II and his wife, Maryellen, Rodney and his wife, Lara, Patricia (who took
great pride in caring for Gramma these past 11 years of her illness) and her
husband, Richard Rock Jr., all of Oneonta, Debra Mayhook of West Brookville,
and Lisa and her husband, Joe, McGrath of Joliet, Ill.; eight great-grandchildren,
Raven and Devin Rock, Roger, Ryan and Riley Ackley, Mel and Jade Ackley and Mark
Mayhook; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Dennis, in 2002; her husband, Harry in 1968; and
three brothers, Wilbur, Bruce and Milton Johnson.
The family would like to give special thanks to Helen Martin, who cared for Leona
for nine years, in the evenings. We also want all the family and friends who
helped care for her to know it was lovingly appreciated.
The family will be receiving friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept.
4, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta. A graveside
service will be at noon Thursday, at Plains Cemetery in Oneonta, with the Rev.
Norman Moran officiating.
