the Charles M Ackley died at his home in Dresden township last Thursday
night, 18 Jul 1907, of blood poisoning and loss of blood following an operation
that morning for the removal of his arm.
On 18 Jun while at work about the barn he struck his hand on a rusty nail making
a wound nearly an inch deep. As he was always a busy man, he paid no particular
attention to his hurt, although it pained him from the start. He kept at work
until the next Sunday when a doctor was called and he went to bed never to rise
again. On Saturday, Jun 29 Jun, Drs. Rohlf of Waverly, Stafford of Sumner and
Wight of New Hampton attended him. The hand was opened and drainage tubes put
in. It was thought amputation could be avoided, and for a time the hand seemed
to be doing better, but slowly. He continued to improve until Mon, 5 Jul when
the Dr noticed he was not so well, and on Thur morning 18 Jul, an operation was
thought to be necessary, and Drs. Wight, Schilling and Landon amputated the arm
at a point between elbow and wrist. He came out from the influence of the chloroform
apparently in good condition and visited a little with relatives who were there.
He seemed better until 2 PM when the nurse saw the arm had started to bleed.
The Drs came and found that the arteries had given way, due probably to a sclerotic
condition of the same.
Charles Montgomery Ackley was born in Yates Co., NY Jun 1844. He came with his
parents to WI and grew to manhood there. He then moved to Lawrence Il, where
he was united in marriage with Elizabeth O DeGraw of the same place on 1 Jan
1867. To them were born 10 children: Mrs Ella Stephen, Mrs Adele Leach, Frank,
Mrs Mabel Michener, Fred, Ernest, Mrs Florence Wesp, Mrs Pearl Linderman, Bertha
and Horace. These with the faithful wife and aged mother, two brothers and two
sisters, and numerous other relatives., mourn because of his taking away. Most
of the children live in the vicinity of the old home and all were with him most
of the time during his last days, except Mrs Minchener and Mrs Wesp, who were
unavoidably absent. All were present at the funeral which was held from the
residence Sun at 11 o'clock, conducted by the Rev Jones, pastor of Baptist church
of Fredericksburg. The remains were interred in Rose Hill cemetery at Fredericksburg,
and the large attendance testified very strongly the love and esteem which neighbors
and friends for miles around had long felt for the deceased.
Our friend met his end calmly. It was our good fortune to know this man well.
There was rugged sincerity, steadfast courage and fortitude in his make-up;
so that, while his emaciated body showed the work of agonizing pains, no complaints
came from him. It was an ending such as one who knew him could conceive. Doing
and undergoing through a long life, he had learned what true manhood, true husband
hood and fatherhood meant, and the sorrow around that deathbed, in that stricken
family circle, was the kind that earthly sympathy, even so generous and spontaneous
as in this sad case, fails to solace. Touching beyond words was the devotion
of the wife. never leaving the room, her only rest upon a couch, she stayed
where she could know his every need. In the blind groping down the gloomy valley
her hand was in his, her love encompassed him about, her gentle words were potent
in the stress of pain to mitigate and assuage the pangs of dissolution. "Until
death do us part," found here its veritable exemplification. To this faithful
and sorrowing wife, to all the stricken family we join with many friends in the
extent ion of deep sympathy Charles Montgomery ACKLEY and Elizabeth Opehlia
