Richfield Springs--Word has been received here of the recent death of a former
principal of the Richfield Springs High School, Earle L. Ackley, 86, in a Johnstown
hospital. He was born in Conewango, NY. He graduated from Fredonia normal school
in 1898 and from Syracuse University in 1905. He was principal here from 1905-1910,
when he moved to Johnstown to become principal and later superintendent of the
Johnstown school system until his retirement in 1949. He was secretary and treasurer
of the State Council of School Superintendents for 35 years. He married Mary
S. Jarks, a member of the local school faculty, in 1906. Mrs. Ackley died in
1959. He leaves four sons, Frederick E., Schenectady; E. Laurence Jr., Liverpool;
John A., Chappaqua; and Harold J., Johnstown
This Ackley is a decendent of Johan Hendrick Eckler, the name Ackley was adopted
by Johan's grandson John born 5 Oct 1792 in Herkimer Co, NY
