GEORGE N. ACKLEY

RETIRED ENGINEER, 81
George N. Ackley, 81, a retired engineer who once taught engineering and machine design at the former Spring Garden Institute to GIs returning from World War II, died Monday of respiratory failure at Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg.

A Philadelphia native and graduate of Olney High School, Mr. Ackley lived in Hunting Park for many years.

He worked for several Philadelphia manufacturers of electrical components, and during World War II became self-employed, designing and producing parts for the government.

For six years in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he took night classes at Drexel Institute, now Drexel University. He often commuted from Lancaster, where he lived while working for the makers of Schick razor blades.

He kept piling up the credits along with the miles, but stopped before earning a degree, said his wife, Ann. The travel got to be too much, she said.

Mr. Ackley ultimately spent 20 years with Amp Inc., another company that makes electrical components, from its Harrisburg office. He and his wife moved to Hershey, where they lived for 29 years. He retired in 1986.

Mr. Ackley was a 50-year member and past master of the Masonic Kensington Lodge 211. The Civil War was among his interests in addition to engineering.

In addition to his wife of 45 years, he is survived by a brother, Paul.
