SACRIFICED HIMSELF FOR HIS COMPANIONS
VICTIM OF HERR'S ISLAND DAM
James H. Ackley, First Reached by Rescuers, Refused Aid Until His Friends Had
Been Saved, and Lost His Life.
By Associated Press.
PITTSBURG, August 27. -One man was drowned this evening at the new Herr's Island
dam because he would not be saved until his three companions had been rescued.
James H. Ackley, aged 22, of Warren, O., is the drowned man and his companions,
John C. White, aged 27, Walter C. White, his brother, and Ralph Fitzgerald, a
cousin of the Whites, all from Washington, Pa., narrowly escaped a like fate.
The accident was one of several of similar character since the opening of the
dam several weeks ago. The young men were in a skiff rowing around below the
dam and, all unconscious of their danger, pulled too close to the dam and the
skiff was drawn by the undertow into the bar trap, throwing the occupants into
the water.
Rescuers reached Ackley first, but he insisted upon the saving of the others
before he would accept help. John White was taken from the water in an unconscious
condition and his brother Walter was thought to be dead but was rescued.
Both were finally resuscitated, and will probably recover. Fitzgerald was rescued
in good time, but Ackley, overcome by exhaustion, was drowned while the others
were being taken to the shore. His Death Notice appeared in the Altoona Mirror
on 28 Aug 1903 in Altoona, Blair, Pennsylvania LOST LIFE RIVER.
Young Men in Skiff Caught in Current and Capsized-Victims Make Desperate Fight.
Pittsburgh, Aug. 28- Caught in the swift current of the Allegheny river at the
north side of Herrs Island dam a skiff containing four men was overturned, drowning
one of the party, James H. Ackley, aged 22. an engraver and painter, of Warren,
O. The three others, John C. and Walter C. White, brothers, aged 22 and 19 respectively,
and Ralph Carter, aged 18, all of Washington, Pa., were rescued after much difficulty
by three separate persons and taken to engine house No. 8, River avenue. The
drowning happened almost at the same place where just one month ago four children
gave up their lives to the treacherous falls over the traps and wickets. A telegram
announcing the death of young Ackley was the first news his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Thaddeus Ackley, of Warren, O., had received of their missing son for over
two years. His father is a wealthy jeweler of that city. A quarrel, however,
sent James Ackley from his home. After spending a. while in West Virginia he
got work with the Hasel plant, No. 2, . flint glass factory at West Washington,
where he met the three men who were with him in the boat Last September all four
lost their positions through a strike and ever since they have been working as
sign painters. For three weeks they have lived at 20 Isabella street, the boarding
house of Mrs. Fackett | +3050 | vi. | Carl Harris ACKLEY. |
