SARAH ANN VALENTINE
Written in her own hand--1922
Sarah Ann VALENTINE, daughter of Delilah HODGE and Daniel Spencer VALENTINE,
was born on June 19, 1837, in the town of Schodack, Rensselaer County, NY, one
mile east from Nassau Village near Herricks Pond.
In November 1846, her father, mother, and their four children, Noah Hodge, Charles
Wesley, Sarah Ann, and Amelia Jane (their eldest son John Seeley and their youngest
son Daniel Spencer having died in infancy) with our household goods we came eleven
miles with teams, had our goods loaded on a Canal Boat at Albany. Arrived at
Rome late on Saturday afternoon.
My father found a man with a team going to Stokes. We went with him and stayed
there (my Mother, sister and I) stayed there until my Father and brothers went
to Piney Settlement, Greig, Lewis County, NY which was to be our home, and had
teams come for us and our goods. Our home was a log house with a living room
and two bedrooms with fireplace and brick oven below, a good sleeping room and
storeroom up stairs, a cellar and wood house.
My mother was quite homesick that winter not being used to such a home. There
had been a good school house built near our home the summer before we came there.
Miss Sarah Pomeroy was the teacher that winter. It was also used for Sunday School
and Religious service. Ministers would occasionally come and preach. There were
twelve families living in the settlement. My father drew logs to the mill, had
lumber sawed, and made shingle in the living room near the fire place in the
evening until he had enough to build a good house which he done most of the work
himself being a carpenter..
My mother died December 6, 1867 (born October 28, 1801). My Father died May 9,
1868
In 1853 Sarah A. was married to David BURR on October 16. Noah Hodge never married.
Charles W. married Sarah E. FLEETWOOD of New York City. After her death he married
Evalena C. CURTISS, Saratoga Springs, NY. Amelia Jane married William H. WILCOX
of Leyden, Lewis County, NY.
My father's family have all passed away except Sarah A. who married John D. ACKLEY
on November 18, 1874. He died May 6, 1902 by whom she had one daughter Ada Jane,
born April 16, 1877. Ada Jane married George W. CLINCH Dec 28, 1904.
John Devoe ACKLEY and Sarah Ann VALENTINE had the following children:
