COUPLE WEDDED 50 YEARS
ANNIVERSARY DAY TOMORROW
Mr and Mrs Benjamin Thorp of Verona Village, Formerly of Durhamville-Will Quietly
Celebrate the Event at Their Home- He is a Veteran of the Civil War and a Successful
Farmer.
Mr and Mrs Benjamin Thorp who lived for many years on a farm just east of Durhamville,
will celebrate tomorrow their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their present home
in the village of Verona. Both are well known in Oneida as well as in the vicinity
of their homestead; and scores of friends will extend hearty congratulations
and wish them many more years of happiness. They have planned no gathering or
celebration honor of the event, but will quietly observe it at home in the contentment
of each others presence and in the happiness of good health.
Mr Thorp was born in England March, 15, 1844, of good rugged stock. He came
to this country with his father, John Thorp, when eight years old, and settled
in Westmoreland, where he grew to manhood and attended district school. Aug
2, 1862, he enlisted in Company H 117th N Y Volunteer Infantry, under Col William
Pease and Captain Stevens and served three years in the Civil War, participating
in all the battles of his regiment, including Chapin's farm, Drury's Bluff, Petersburg
Heights, and Grant's campaign through the Wilderness. He was also at the battle
of Fort Flasher and participated with his regiment in its capture. Here his
regiment lost 110 men.
Mr Thorp was wounded at Petersburg Heights in 1864 by the bursting of a shell,
which struck him in the left side and fractured three ribs. He was carried off
the field for dead, but finally recovered and rejoined his command. He was honorably
discharged from the United States service at Raleigh N C in July, 1865, and mustered
out in Syracuse.
Returning to Westmoreland, Mr Thorp married on May 6, 1866, his youthful school
mate, Miss S Fidelia Ackley, eldest daughter of John D Ackley of that place.
Rev M E Dunham solemnized the ceremony. Mrs Thorp was one of seven children,
of whom three besides herself are living: Mrs Robert Lewis and John D Ackley
Jr, of Rome and Mrs Taber Samson of Vernon. She had attended the old Hampton
Seminary at Westmoreland, in that day a noted educational institution.
In the spring of 1867 Mr and Mrs Thorp moved to a farm previously mentioned
just east of Durhamville. In September of last year, having spent 49 years together
in farming they decided to retire and move to Verona Village where they are comfortably
located and are enjoying the fruits of a very busy life.
Mr Thorp has been very successful as a farmer, which occupation he has followed
all his life. He has never sought nor held public office. He has been a member
of John R Stewarts Post, No. 174, G A R of Oneida for 33 years and has held all
the important offices in that organization from commander down. For 20 years
he was chaplain of the post.
Mr and Mrs Thorp have six children: Miss Effie Thorp and Mrs Walter I Barber
of Mechanicsville, Saratoga Count; Benjamin Adelbert Thorp of Albany, an engineer
on the New York Central railroad; Mrs Frank Sheets who lives near Crystal Lake
in Verona; Frederick S Thorp who resides on the homestead near Durhamville; and
Francis Ackley Thorp, who lives at home in Verona.. They also have nine grandchildren
two of whom, Marion and Ethel Sheets are attending the Oneida High School.
Both Mr and Mrs Thorp have been communicants of St John's church, Oneida, since
Sept. 30, 1884, when they were confirmed by the late Bishop Huntington. They
have also taken from the first and active interest in St Andrew's church, Durhamville,
and helped to build that edifice. The congratulations of hosts of friends are
extended to them on this their golden anniversary.
