MORGAN, Jeffrey John, 42, of Lexington, died Friday, April 14,
2000. Jeff was born June 23, 1957, in Birmingham, Ala. and grew up in Lynchburg,
a son of Tom and Helen Morgan of Lynchburg. A 1980 graduate of VMI, Morgan joined
the Keydet Club in 1991. Through his tireless efforts, the Athletic Scholarship
Fund Raising Organization has enjoyed unprecedented growth. Annual revenues have
increased from
$830,000 to $1.4 million with endowment funds growing from $3.2 million to $13.3
million. As a cadet, he was a dean's list student and majored in economics. He
was a four-year starter for the Keydet football team at the noseguard position.
A member of the 1977 Southern Conference Championship Team and a captain of the
1979 team.
His first class year, he received the Henry Fairfax Ayers Medal as the most valuable
senior player. In the 1976 Delaware game, he scored the winning touchdown, a
rare moment of glory for a defensive lineman. Following graduation, he worked
for International Circuit Technology, C. B. Fleet Company, and as a math teacher
at Lexington High School. He spent the 1983-84 years as as graduate assistant
football coach at VMI under Bob Thalman while earning his MBA degree from James
Madison University. In 1985, he embarked on a six-year career with the engineering
firm of Babcock and Wilcox in his hometown of Lynchburg. Working primarily with
the Naval Nuclear Fuel Division, he held the positions of planner, lead planner,
senior planner, sales specialist, and marketing and contract specialist.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, is his wife of 18 years, Jody Ackley Morgan;
and three children, Jake, Hannah, and Cameron; brother and sister-in-law, Richard
and Florence Morgan of Tyro; sister, Linda Wilson of Lynchburg; mother and father-in-law,
Earl and Edna Ackley of Indiantown, Fla.; brothers-in-law and wives, Jim and
Susan Ackley of Lynchburg, Robert and Ann Ackley of Greenville, S.C., and Steve
and Beth Heatwole of Richmond; 15 nieces and nephews. Memorial services will
be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the Jackson Memorial Hall at
VMI. Rev. Martin Stokes, Jr., Chaplain Col..
James S. Park, and Chaplain Charles Caudill officiating. The family will receive
immediately following the service in Moody Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions

Obituary: A memorial service for Jeffrey John Morgan, 42, executive vice president
of the Virginia Military Institute Keydet Club, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at
Jackson Memorial Hall at VMI in Lexington.
Mr. Morgan, a Rockbridge County resident, died when the private plane he was
piloting from a Keydet Club golf function in Williamsburg to James Madison University
in Harrisonburg clipped some trees and crashed in Shenandoah National Park Friday.
A 1980 VMI graduate and former football team captain, he was hired as executive
vice president of the Keydet Club, the fund-raising arm of VMI's athletic programs,
in 1991. Through his efforts, the organization has enjoyed unprecedented growth,
with annual revenues increasing from $830,000 to $1.4 million. Endowment funds
have grown from $3.2 to $13.3 million, a VMI spokesman said.
"Jeff embodied the absolute best of VMI: character, temperament, dedication,
intelligence, enthusiasm," said VMI Superintendent Josiah Bunting III. "He
truly gave his life to this school."
Ralph Costen, Keydet Club president, said, "He was a tireless worker whose
vision and creativity allowed the Keydet Club to become a model for fund-raising
organizations across the country."
After VMI graduation, Mr. Morgan, who majored in economics, worked for International
Circuit Technology, C.B. Fleet Co. and Lexington High School in Lexington, where
he had taught math.
The Birmingham, Ala., native was a graduate assistant VMI football coach during
the 1983-84 season while he was earning his master of business administration
degree from James Madison University.
Before joining the Keydet Club staff, he worked for six years doing planning,
sales, marketing and contracts for the engineering firm of Babcock and Wilcox
in Lynchburg, where he grew up.
Survivors include his wife, Jody Ackley Morgan; a son, Jake Morgan; and two daughters,
Cameron Morgan and Hannah Morgan, all of Rockbridge County; his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Thomas J. Morgan Jr. of Lynchburg; a brother, Richard Morgan of Tyro;
and a sister, Linda Wilson of Lynchburg.
