Dr. Ackley, married to Letha G. Ackley for 44 years, retired from the U.S. Navy Dental Corps following 28 years of distinguished service to family and country. He was born in Marion, Ohio, and served as a corpsman in World War II, European Theatre. After the war, he received his undergraduate degree from Ohio Wesleyan and his dental degree from Ohio State. With one year of civilian dentistry, he returned to the U.S. Navy, his real enjoyment, and served there faithfully for 28 years. His military career began in Norfolk and ended in 1983 in Portsmouth at the Dental Clinic.

George was a loving husband and father who placed his family ahead of all else. A man who took great pleasure in seeing people smile and sharing the simple things in life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Letha G., and is survived by his five children, sons: George William III, James Mitchell, Thomas Eugene and Robert Lawrence, and his little girl: Claudia Lorraine. Survivors also include a nephew, Douglas Hiles of Hampton; a brother, Daniel Ackley of Smithfield; a sister, Helen Koker of Columbus, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren hailing from Pennsylvania to Virginia to Florida.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. A chapel service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association
