$500 Loss Listed in Biggest Marion County Stock Theft in Five Years

Theft of eight head of cattle valued at nearly $500 from a field on the H C Ackley farm six miles north of Marion on the Bucyrus pike was reported today to the sheriff's department.
Mr. Ackley told Deputy Sheriff W H Willis who investigated that the cattle disappeared some time since Wednesday afternoon. They were in a large herd which had been put in the field to graze Wednesday.
Deputy Willis reported the theft was discovered this morning when Mr. Ackley found a gate to the field open. Mr. Ackley immediately made a check of the herd and found that eight were missing. Deputy Willis said that he and Mr. Ackley made a check-up of the neighborhood but were unable to find any trace of the cattle. The method used to take the cattle had not been determined today. Deputy Willis said he could find no trace of tire tracks in the field and that the possibility the thieves herded the cattle out of the field and loaded them on a truck parked on the Bucyrus pike.
The field is located about three fourths of a mile west of the Bucyrus pike and there is a woods between the field and the highway.
Deputy Willis reported that the loss represents the largest live stock theft in Marion county in five years. Mr. Ackley said seven heifers and a young bull were in the group taken and he estimated their total weight at about 4,500 pounds
