(Sam) CHILDERS Sr4
was born on 19 May 1881 in Fort Gibson, Muskogee , Oklahoma.4,92,232,369 He appeared
in the census in 1900 in Oklahoma. He was living in 1900 in Jordan
Valley, Pawnee , Oklahoma.92
living with grandfather Samuel Ackley He died on 28 Oct 1962 in Vinita, Craig,
Oklahoma.4,232 He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.4 His mother died when he was seven years old and his
father died when he was but ten. After his mother's death his father, Richard
"Dick" took Sam Sr. to Pryor Creek, l.T. to stay with his aunt and
uncle, Henry Wilson and Margaret (McCausland) Ackley.
There is no positive record but Sam Sr. may have stayed with his aunt "Mag"
until his uncle Henry died in 1891. He went to live with his uncle Abraham Lincoln
Ackley but, as stated , Abe was a little mean-tempered so his stay with them
was short.
He then went to stay with his grandparents, Samuel and Sarah (Rush)Ackley and
remained with them even after he married. Mathias Rush is quoted as stating that
"Sam and Sally live with their son, Abe." Samuel Ackley, an excerpt
from a letter written by Sam Sr.'s cousin, Harry Wiggs, states;
"Sam (Sam Sr.) stayed with grandpa until his death. (Grandpa's death). Grandpa
willed Sam his farm. Sam sold it and bought land near Sand Springs. Dad and I
went to see Sam about 1930 when I was in OkIa on visit."
The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Ida McCollom 12 March 1969,
from Stockton, California. Ida May (Ackley) McCollom is Samuel and Sarah (Rush)
Ackley's granddaughter.
"Sam (Sam Sr.) was about two years old when his mother died. (Other records
indicate he was seven). She had typhoid for weeks and weeks and had that baby
girl (Sara Anna). Dick (Sam Sr.s father) took Sam over to Pryor after that. Aunt
Mag Duffield (Widow of Henry Ackley and wife of William "Bill" Duftield)
told me this, the last time I saw her. She said he (Dick) hung out with some
Indians over there - as I recall things she said - seems like he left Sam with
them. Dick and Uncle Henry both had typhoid and died.
"When Dick died Sam was at Aunt Mags and they brought him to grandpas. I
think it was about '89 they got the old lease over east of Keystone -built a
large log house. Grandmother kept a store there. There were some people who lived
near to them - I just can't recall their names only the lady's name was Daisy.
She ran a subscription school. They sent Sam to that when the strip was opened
(April 22 1889) - they built a little log school house about where the highway
64 is or was closest to the lake on the south side of Dry Lake. They then sent
him over there. When grandpa moved over in strip they were still in that district.
That is the only place I know of him going to
