Peikko was not very generous at all and he chose the smallest item -- the felt hat. Peikko was very wealthy like all Gnomes and he shouted to the fisherman that he would fill his hat to the brim with silver ! This is exactly what Paavo wanted him to do.
Peikko took a bag of silver out of his purse and dumped it into the hat. The bag was soon empty but the hat was not full. Peikko took out another bag of silver and dumped it into the hat. Peikko thought that the fisherman must have a very big head as he had never before seen a hat to hold so much silver ! The second bag ran out but the hat was still not full. Peikko was so amazed at the size of Paavo's head that he used all the silver he had without filling the hat.
Peikko was very sad when he arrived at the wedding. "Why do you look so glum?" asked the fisherman. Peikko sighed, "I am afraid that I failed to fill your hat. I told you that I would fill it to the brim with silver but I could not. "Aho Peikko ! You are still my generous friend !" shouted the fisherman and he lifted his glass to drink a toast to Peikko. Peikko was very pleased that Paavo was not angry and he was happy to drink the toast in front of so many people. Peikko was very proud of himself and smiled widely at everyone; but, the fisherman smiled widest of all !
After the wedding, Peikko started his journey toward home. Peikko never knew that the small felt hat had a hole in it and that all of the silver went straight into the tree stump. The fisherman was a very smart man indeed.
SCENE 3:
The next morning Peikko came to a lake and saw a young man named Timmo drinking water from the lake. "Aho Timmo ! What are you doing here ?" cried Peikko. "I am very thirsty and I plan to drink this lake dry," said Timmo. "Please don't do that" cried Peikko. "I love this lake." "All right, but it will cost you a bag of silver" said Timmo. "I will gladly pay" said Peikko as he began running toward home. "You must hurry you little Gnome ! As I will not stop drinking until you return with the silver!" Peikko was in such a hurry and was so excited that he didn't know which way to go. Peikko believed that Timmo could drink the lake dry!
