Macon County was formed in the year 1828 from Haywood County and at the time of formation contained parts of Jackson and Swain Counties. The census was taken by Thomas Love as he rode door to door. This census is a great aid in helping determine where an individual lived and in some cases relationships of one family to another. There are no listings for page one and four. There was a total population of 5270 , consisting of 2487 white males, 2333 white females, 416 slaves and 34 free persons of color.
