Debbie ... I received your e-mail with regard to a Christopher Rambo. You line quite possibly goes back to the immigrant, Peter Gunnarson Rambo, who came from Sweden. I have the book, The Rambo Family, by the late Beverly Nelson Rambo, written in 1986. You might be able to get this book on interlibrary loan.
Page 50 -- Swan Rambo was born about 1720 and married Jane Pinson. She was probably related to the Pinsons named in the will of Christopher Ramboe, signed 7 Nov. 1747 and probated in Lunenberg Co., VA on 1 August 1748. Swan and his family lived in Augusta Co., VA and then in 1754 moved to Rowan Co., NC. In 1768 he obtaine land in the Lower Orangeburg Dist. of SC, now known as Barnwell Co. This may not help, but Christopher Ramboe defnitely connects in there somewhere. My line goes back to the immigrant through a family that migrated from Pennsylvania to Washington Co., VA. I am a direct descendant of John Stovall and Aaron Pinson & Delilah, Isaac Sr., Isaac, Jr., Isaac M., William Lawson, Andrew Johnson Pinson. It is good to hear from someone else who is researching the same lines. I have worked on my Pinson line (my maiden name was Pinson) for many years. I would like to hear from you if you would be interested in sharing information. I did not have the name of John Stovall's parents (nor names of Burton, Hatcher in my research).

I received my Pinson information from Ted McVay in Golden, MO. He began with an Aaron, Sr. who died in Lunenburg Co. VA in 1758. Then to an Aaron, Jr. who married Delila Stovall. Next he skips to Rev. Aaron Pinson who he does not know as a son of Aaron, Jr. Could be or could not be related. The sons of Rev. Aaron and wife, Elizabeth _____ were John, Joseph, Aaron, Moses, Isaac and daughters were Jemimah and Mary. There were other children but he did not name them. Ted next goes to Aaron Pinson who he calls Aaron of Spartanburg. His wife was also Elizabeth _____. Ted traced five of this Aaron's sons: Zephaniah, Aaron, Joseph, Lot and Nathan. My husband's line comes from Nathan who had a son also named Nathan. Nathan Jr. had a son Jefferson Davis Pinson who married Emma Christopherson and so on for my husband's Pinsons. I received this information from Ted about four or five years ago. He had done research on the Pinson families that moved to Missouri and traced them back to South Carolina. That's about all the details I have. The Rev. Aaron Pinson left a will in Laurens Co. SC dated 1794. There is no date of death. He is not on the census rolls of 1800 so he died between 1794 and 1800. I do not know where this Aaron Pinson was born nor the names of his parents. I hope to soon begin more research on this family. Margaret Lewis

DEAR PINSON RESEARCHERS, I KNOW A FEW OF YOU FROM CORRESPONDENCE YEARS AGO. WHEN WE PUBLISHED "THE PINSON QUARTERLIES" IN 1978, ONE OF THE PRIME MOTIVES IN DOING SO WAS TO ELIMINATE DUPLICATION OF EFFORT AND TO CLEAR UP SOME LONG-STANDING ERRORS THAT HAD BECOME "FIXED" AS IF THEY WERE FACTS IN THE INFORMATION THAT WAS FLOATING AROUND. WE DID NOT SUCCEED. MANY OF THE QUESTIONS THAT WERE BEING ASKED THEN ARE BEING ASKED NOW AND MOST ARE NOT EVEN AWARE OF THE ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN "THE PINSON QUARTERLIES" PERHAPS INTERNET WILL FINALLY GIVE US A FORUM THAT WILL REACH ALL OF THE RESEARCHERS. AS YOU KNOW, WE CAN BE FAIRLY CERTAIN THAT ALL PINSONS ARE KIN. IT WAS AN UNCOMMON NAME IN EARLY TIMES (ALTHOUGH WE SEEM TO HAVE SOLVED THAT PROBLEM IN THE MEANTIME!!) EVERYONE THAT I KNOW OF CAN TRACE THEIR LINEAGE BACK TO OLD AARON OF LUNENBURG OR REV. AARON OF LAURENS. A FEW OTHERS, SUCH AS DR. E. R. PINSON, THINK THEIR LINE IS SO CONNECTED, BUT CANNOT PROVE IT. IN FUTURE EMAILS, I WOULD LIKE TO LIST THE MANY PUBLICATIONS WHICH CONTAIN PINSON RESEARCH AND LET YOU KNOW NOW THAT MANY OF THEM CONTAIN WRONG INFORMATION. HOWEVER, THEY ARE OUT THERE AND MUST BE CONSIDERED AS PART OF THE RESEARCH EFFORTS. WE ARE APPARENTLY BEING LINKED-UP THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF JAKE & DEBBIE WASSERBURGER AND LET ME THANK THEM IN THIS EMAIL FOR ALL THEIR EFFORTS. SOME OF US WHO ARE OLDER CAN NO LONGER MAKE THE SAME LEVEL OF CONTRIBUTION THAT WE ONCE DID, AND WE DO APPRECIATE THE YOUNGER ONES COMING ALONG WHO CAN AND DO MAKE THEIR CONTRIBUTION. IN THE 1750s & 1760s AND WHO OPERATED A GRIST MILL KNOWN AS "PINSON'S MILL" ON THE NORTH FORK OF THE HAW RIVER, WAS ALSO A LIEUTENANT IN THE COLONIAL MILITIA OF NORTH CAROLINA. HE AND A JOSEPH PINSON LEFT THAT AREA AND BY 1767 WERE IN LAURENS COUNTY, S.C.

JUST USING THIS EXAMPLE TO ILLUSTRATE SOME IDEAS.

MARY "POLLY" PINSON, A DAUGHTER OF ISAAC PINSON DIED LAURENS 1842, HAD MARRIED A BURGESS; I THINK IT MAY HAVE BEEN WILLIAM BURGESS.

SINCE I HAVE NEVER WORKED ON THE BURGESS PART OF ISAAC'S DESCENDANTS, I DO NOT KNOW IF WILLIAM WAS OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE BEEN MARRIED BEFORE HE MARRIED POLLY PINSON AND PERHAPS HAD A CHILD NAMED BERRY BURGESS (BUT CALLED PINSON AFTER HIS MOTHER DIED AND HE CAME INTO ISAAC'S HOUSEHOLD).

THIS IS ALL SPECULATION NOW, BUT WE DO HAVE SOME WORK TO DO HERE TO AGE THE WILLIAM BURGESS AND PROVE HE WAS THE HUSBAND OF POLLY PINSON.

THERE IS LITTLE DOUBT THAT THE BERRY PINSON BURGESS IS SOMEHOW RELATED TO THE POLLY PINSON AND HER BURGESS HUSBAND, WHOEVER HER WAS. LET'S FOLLOW THAT ! DP

    Dear James,

In the first issue of the Pinson Quarterly at the bottom of page 48, "Pete" Hayden presents the record that indicates "Cross Hill" John Pinson (as researchers referred to him) was the son of Aaron died 1758 Lunenburg, Va. The fact that we can know John belonged to the oldest of the Aarons, but was with Rev. Aaron and Joseph down in Laurens is one of the strongest facts favoring relationship between all these Pinsons. The task is to prove that relationship for Rev. Aaron and Joseph and to connect them with the ones who stayed back in Va. and N.C. David Pinson

    Dear David,

I know that a number of researchers have confused the Rev. Aaron Pinson of SC with either Aaron Sr. of VA or Aaron Jr. of NC. I still see family trees that have perpetuated this error. But I'm curious whether you've seen any research that might positively link the SC and NC branches.

It seems quite possible they were in that the Rev. Aaron himself lived for a while in NC -- on two separate occasions if I recall correctly. More specifically what prompts this query is I found a family tree that claims that son John of Aaron Sr. of VA died in Laurens District, SC, where the Rev. Aaron's family lived.

My guess is this is just one more example of a family tree that has confused Aarons. But if it's accurate, then this would be another interesting link between the two branches, in addition to the facts that they were both in NC at some of the same times and that both families had branches that moved to GA and both families preferred some of the same names (Aaron, Isaac, etc.).

Thanks for any information or guesses you might have on this matter, as well as for the Pinson genealogy notes you've recently been sending my way. -- Jim Pinson Dundee, MI

    From: Gary Pinson

    Debbie,
My name is Gary D. Pinson, I was born in Milan, Tn. in 1951, raised in northern Carroll Co., tn. near Huntingdon. My father was Revis E. Pinson, was born in 1916 and raised in Carroll Co., my grandfather, Leotus ("Lote") E. Pinson, I believe was born in 1880, but not sure about his place of birth, but I believe its also Carroll Co. My great-grandfather was Cas Pinson, who also lived in Carroll Co., but I don't know much about him, except that he is buried in Carroll Co. I visited his grave when I was a child. The other interesting info I have is that the first Pinson to settle in our area (Carroll Co.) is buried in an abandoned graveyard near the farm I was raised on. His name was Isaac Pinson, and according to the tombstone he came here from Mecklenberg Co., Va.. He married into the Shoffner family in Carroll Co.
The old graveyard was known as the old Shoffner graveyard. I tried to find this graveyard recently but could not, my older brother, Jimmy, believes he can find it again. I would like to try to clean and preserve the tombstone.
I was in Richmond, Va. about 8 yrs ago and I went to their state archives and found various documents on Pinson's living in and around Meckenlenberg, Co. in the 1700's. I remember the name Aaron and Thomas, but could not determine which was the father of the "Isaac" that settled in our area. I wrote down some of the information from the Va. archives, but can't put my hands on it now.

You've probably already found this, but one night while surfing the internet I did a search on "Pinson geanology" and found info posted from a gentleman in Calif. who had a marriage license of a Pinson living in Plymouth, Ma. in the 1630's.

There was a gentleman in So. Ill. doing research a few years ago, who came up with some very interesting history, although I am now satisfied it does not apply our family lineage, he traced some Pinsons back to Spanish heritage with the family name of Pinzon. Supposedly some Pinsons in the Southern U.S. were descendents of Alonzo Pinzon, who captained either the Ninta or Pinta with Christopher Columbus in 1492. If you read history about Columbus, you'll find that Alonzo and his brother Vincent captained the Ninta & Pinta. Alonzo was the one who deserted Columbus and tried to make off with the gold. But the info I got from this gentleman does not match up with facts I know about our family lineage.
I am sure our family has similar roots to yours and we're probably distant cousins. My grandmother used to say we're of Dutch heritage, and this is possible, because some of the English who were seeking escape from religious persecution first went to Holland, and some left from Holland on their way to America. I read this in some history book, but can't remember where. If you learn anything interesting please let me know. Gary Pinson Nashville, Tn.

    Dear Debbie,

    >[dfw wrote] [snip] I have PINSON names that are in the same location, time period, and names that my line is, but I can't place them in correct lines due to lack of information. I have tried to keep Aaron Pinson's line straight, but I may have mission information.

[jlp] Ooh. I'd love to see the information you have on Pinsons and compare. Actually, I should have said I THINK our ACTUAL family trees overlap (ancestors), although certainly our research does (the tree I have in my computer). Here's what I mean: The biggest gaps I have right now are proving with more than circumstantial evidence that my great-great-grandfather Isaac M. Pinson, of Caswell and Rockingham Counties in NC, was the son of the other Isaac Pinson in Caswell County at the same time and that HE was the same Isaac who was the son of Aaron Pinson Jr., who was definitely the son of Aaron Pinson Sr. Got that?

Dates and places check out, but it's hard to say, for example, that Isaac Sr. is the same Isaac mentioned as a son in Aaron Jr.'s will. (Men frequently named sons after brothers or other relatives in those days, so it often makes for confusion and mistaken speculation when you have several people in the same and related branches with the same name in the same area.) Another descendant of Isaac M. Pinson -- Lou Hixson of Bath, MI -- has spent years researching everything from old church records to deeds, etc. and also even hired a professional genealogist in Caswell County to try to turn up anything else that could positively fill in the evidence chain. She's pretty convinced there's a preponderance of evidence, but I haven't yet seen what I would call absolutely positive proof.

    >[dfw] Most of my information comes from Census records, and earlier info. is from what I've gathered from others peoples' data and library books. Limited at that. Are there any published information on the Pinson families? Do you go back into the Stovall line? I started as you probably did with information written down in the family and with interviews with those living who could provide any help. I then proceeded to Census records and Civil War records (the for later ancestors). I also found much of my information through the Web and Family Tree Maker CDs.

[jlp] Yes, there are books about the Pinsons. One is Ernest Ray Pinson's "Descendants of Drury Pinson" or something like that. (Actually, the title on the cover differs from the title inside!) Lou has mentioned another book to me with information about the Pinsons in it as they feed into another line. I forget that title off the top of my head but could find it.

A David Pinson in Texas used to put out a Pinson family genealogy newsletter with detailed articles. But personally, I think the best is yet to come because I've seen drafts of a few of the chapters for the Pinson family book Lou is writing, and it's VERY thorough.

By the way, I've looked at your Web page now and was impressed by the Stovall information. That's the sort of stuff Lou has on the Pinsons, only her chapters actually quote the deeds, wills, guardianship records, etc. Your Stovall page will help me add to and correct my own Stovall information, gathered mainly from Family Tree Maker disks.

[dfw] How can we help each other?

[jlp]Well, you've already helped me with your Web site and the query note you'd posted elsewhere on the net. Your Pinson information that's not posted might also be of help. Meanwhile, I need to digest what you have online and see what other material I might be able to fill in other than that about Mary Smith, for example. Nice to meet you, and I hope we can be of some help to each other.

By the way, I told Lou Hixson about your Web page, so she might e-mail you later, too. If not, you might contact her at hixson.lou@acd.net --

P.S. My maternal grandmother's family, the Catos, used to live in Monroe County, AL, before and during the Civil War. I also understand there's a Pinson, AL. Do you know anything about its origin by any chance?

    Hi Debbie,
We're neighbors! I live in Birmingham. My husband, John, and I were both born in Gadsden (Etowah Co), and our families still live there (except for John's 2 sisters who also live in B'ham); [snip] Both of our families have lived in AL since way back (1800s), mine back to all of my 2nd great grandparents, and most of my 3rd great grandparents and all in Cherokee & Etowah counties.
John's father - also, a John - was an only child and grew up in Gadsden, but his mother is from GA where her mother still lives. [snip] I do have a nephew (my sister's) who just turned 1 (my parents first grandchild!). My sister is 18 mos. younger than me and we have a brother who just turned 19.

Elizabeth Rambo was born in PA sometime after 1720 the daughter of Sven (Swan, Swen) Rambo and most likely his second wife, Barbara __ although she could have been a daughter of the first wife, Ann Christian. Sven was the son of Peter Rambo and Magdalena Skute and the grandson of Peter Gunnarson Rambo and Britta Mattson. He was born 10 Oct 1677 in Philadelphia and died 1730 in Lancaster Co., PA.

Elizabeth's brother (or half-brother), Swan, married Jane Pinson. After the elder Sven's death, Barbara and her children moved to Rockingham Co., VR. The youngest son, Jacob born 1729, was my ancestor.

    Ed,

From where were you trying to link from. Were you on one of the webpages "homepages" or were you trying to get to it from the index and names files?

I need to do a lot of linking still, but my MAJOR names, such as STOVALL, PINSON, AUSTIN, etc. I want to get linked correctly as soon as possible. The spouses names are the ones that will come later.

Thanks, and talk with you more later. Gonna go check it out.

Dear Ed, After sending you my previous e-mail, I started looking through my files some more and came across an ANN Pinson (not Amy) marrying a John W. Weaver on Feb. 14, 1821 in Granville, NC. Could these be the same people? He was born about 1800 in NC and died in Granville, NC, about November 1864. She was born around 1803, but her death date as well as parents are unknown to me. I do have a family tree, however, of at least some of John and Ann's descendants. And wait ... One of them was a son named William Henry Weaver, who married a Nellie A. Daniel on Dec. 27, 1853! As I said, I don't see anything in my files so far on who Ann's parents were, although she IS living in the county where Aaron Pinson Jr. and Delilah Stovall Pinson lived, and they DID have a daughter named Annie. Problem is, Aaron Jr. died April 16, 1801, and Delilah sometime after May 1801. (Also, Delilah was born around 1755, making her about 48 when Ann was said to have been born around 1803.) I'll keep looking and let you know if I find anything else that might be of interest to you. -- Jim Pinson

Hmm. I don't have an Amy Pinson in my files as the name of one of the 13 children of Aaron Pinson Jr. and his wife, Delilah Stovall. I notice, though, that I don't know the name of one of Aaron's SISTERS, a daughter of Aaron Pinson Sr. and Elizabeth Rambo. So, I'm interested in what you have about Amy and her husband, etc. A second possibility is that Amy is a descendant of the Rev. Aaron Pinson, who's often confused with Aaron Pinson, Jr. He lived in South Carolina but also spent time in North Carolina. The Rev. Aaron and Aaron Jr. are probably related, but I don't think anyone's proven how. Also, I assume you've seen the Debbie Wasserburger's Pinson and Stovall Web pages. The Stovall material is especially good, taking you back a number of generations to England. As for Aaron Pinson Jr.'s ancestors, past the names of his mother and father and siblings, I don't think anyone has been able to prove anything for sure as far as direct previous connections, although the name of a number of Pinsons before him in Virginia and Massachusetts are known, as well as the history of the family in France, England and Spain. (The Pinson name first dates from Normandy, France, around 1000 A.D. -- they were apparently a Viking family originally because that's who settled that region.) -- Jim Pinson Dundee, MI

    Ed, You write:

    > Yes, we have the name "Ann" as well as "Amy" for the same person. Whatever, she is the wife of JW Weaver, his son William marrying Nellie Daniel. Same dates, locations. The main additional thing I found since my last e-mail that might be of interest is that the researchers whose family trees I've seen so far that have a spouse for "Annie Pinson" (as they have her) who was the daughter of Aaron Pinson Jr. and Delilah Stovall say she married someone by the last name of Cunningham, first name unknown. They list no other spouse for her. I'm not sure what this means without seeing what evidence you've gathered that your Amy or Annie Pinson is indeed Aaron Pinson Jr.'s daughter. Looks to me dates would have to be reconciled somewhere given Aaron's and Delilah's accepted death dates, as well as Delilah's birth date given her age when Ann Pinson, wife of John Washington Weaver is said to have been born. She's certainly in the right county, though, to be a daughter, although without seeing your evidence, this might be another related Ann Pinson. I don't mean to sound negative -- I'm just curious as to how definitive the proof is. If it looks solid, I'd gladly add it to my files to help me understand the Pinson family tree. It's so hard keeping everybody straight sometimes. I mentioned, for example, how many people have confused Aaron Jr. with the Rev. Aaron, although they are definitely two different people. One problem is that the Pinsons liked to use the same names again and again, and that brothers might give sons the same first name as their sons' cousins. My own line can be definitely documented back to an Isaac M. Pinson born in 1789 and living in Caswell County, NC, next door to Granville County in 1810. It seems likely that he was a son of Aaron Jr.'s son Isaac Pinson, who along with my Isaac M. Pinson, was living in Caswell County in 1820. But no one seems to have been able to prove it definitely after looking through all the extant records. So I keep hoping that someone will turn up a family Bible or other private records in the hands of one of the branches.

    > No I don't have the webpage for Wasserburger info. Do you have web >address? Well, I just did a search for her Stovall page, but when I tried to go there, I got a URL not found message. I was able to get there o.k. Another way to try: go to http://geocities.datacellar.net/Heartland/Hills/9850 or http://geocities.datacellar.net/Heartland/Praitie/7552. They are my COSSEY webpages! I'm trying to set up more surname pages, but I need people to donate me their 2mg FREE space at geocities. Once a person moves in, they get a password. That's all I need. Only one free space per e-mail address, and I used mine on the Heartland/Hills/9850 space. My 3rd or 4th cousin (Lamar Cossey) gave me his space and we're adding more Cossey info.

Interested in setting up a PINSON page? I'd help, or do it!!! (hint). In case I didn't mention it before, I have 68,000 names in my database, and the STOVALL/PINSON is the largest, because of all the AUSTINs' that tie into it.

I hope you can see my pages. I'm pretty proud of them, considering I taught myself.

Hoping to hear more on your Pinson line. I'm straightening my files, as I have a new computer, (now I have two!), and I have space to save e-mail foilders on hard drive rather than floppies.

    Later cuz, Debbie

    Ed,

I'll get a vacant address for the Pinson page. It'll be in Heartland somewhere, since that's where the genealogy pages go. I'll be using your e-mail address. They'll send you a password. That is what I need to set it up. I plan on using pinson or some variation in the name of the house I move into. Once we get the password, we can change it to something easier than what they send. Anything easy come to mind? Aaron Dr. married Elizabeth Rambo, the daughter of Christopher. We could use the name chris, or aaron, or aron? Let me know. We can change it at anytime.

I will take anything you give. If it is in gedcom format, then it's really easy to set up for the webpages. What all info do you want on gedcom on the Pinson and Stovall lines? If it goes over a floppy disk size of info. (Which it can easily do with all my info), have you ever used pkzip or pkunzip?

Really excited to have more space to put up data. Thanks, and give me ideas of what you might want on the pages. (The more people on the net we get for geocities, the more pictures, music, and graphics we can get posted besides the data.)

If you can't get the gedcom soon, send me your line straight back to Aaron Jr or Sr. so I can connect you in my database with your address, please. Cuz Debbie

Betsy, by the way, was ELIZABETH WILLIAMS, the daughter of NIMROD WILLIAMS, a Revolutionary War soldier, and I have a good deal of information about the Williams clan also. I am trying to find the ancestry of Joseph Garner (1782-1833). Hope we can help each other!! Jerry Simpson jerry@tyler.net
