Board Approves LH/SH Divisions for Orientals and Welcomes Longhairs to Championship

At the CFA Executive Board meeting in Tulsa, Oriental Longhairs became the Longhair Division of Orientals and, having fulfilled the requirements for advancement, became the 30th shorthair division/breed to be recognized for Championship status, effective May 1, 1995.

A breed display was arranged by Steve Baylus, Oriental Longhair Breed Council Secretary. Board members stopped by briefly before lunch on Saturday to handle the cats and talk with the breeders present, and to sample (demolish) the refreshments. Steve brought along his lavender neuter, Talisyn's Mosby. Also on hand were Steve's mother, Dr. Marie Surasky, with two variant kittens, Semyah's Uptown Girl, blue-cream, and Semyah's In The Buff, cream male; and Talisyn's Seance of Suntea, lavender male (owned by Marilyn Small); local breeders Rosalie and Larry Sorrels with two variants, Darayavaush Nefertiri, ebony spotted tabby, and her kitten, Darayavaush OB Juan Frijole, chestnut male; and Cathy Galfo with her silver ticked tabby kitten, Rakiscats Lady Muertana.

As in other recent breed divisions (Manx, Japanese Bobtail and Scottish Fold), there will be only one show standard and the OLH and OSH Breed Councils will be merged. On Sunday, Bob Agresta, OSH Breed Council Secretary, was confirmed as Secretary of the expanded council. Since the OSH Breed Council also voted to accept bi-colors (it's about time!), the longhairs will be judged in the same color classes (solid, shaded, smoke, tabby, particolor and bi- color) as their shorthair cousins. In addition, shorthair variants will be eligible to compete in the Shorthair Division!

The following is a brief synopsis of the longhaired Orientals journey to Championship status.

It is known that longhaired Orientals existed in Europe prior to their first appearance in the U.S., and at one point they were known as Mandarins. CFA records show that the breed was created primarily by Balinese/Javanese breeders who acquired Oriental Shorthairs, not vice versa. (In fact, the Javanese Breed Council passed a proposal in 1986 to include the OSH as an outcross breed, but the Board voted to take "no action," on the grounds that longhaired Orientals didn't exist yet and what would happen to the "solid" Javanese?) In the early '80s, longhairs also made surprise appearances in a few OSH litters--evidence that the gene was carried by at least one imported OSH and by American Shorthairs used in bi-color programs.

At the February, 1988 CFA Executive Board meeting, Robin Radlein (Rainriver), who had played a large part in the advancement of the breed in TICA, petitioned successfully for the acceptance of the Oriental Longhairs for registration. Robin and nine other breeders promptly registered 34 litters! The first OLH litter registered in CFA was #508219, born June 9, 1983, bred by Billie Cobden (Sholine), who also registered the first two cats, ebony variant males Sholine's Dark Elf and Sholine's Dark Vader, both from that litter. Elf and Vader were out of a red point Javanese and a chestnut-tortie OSH. The other founding breeders were Bev Eitner (Berkeley), Rosemary Hannon (Tomytycoon), Carolyn Hansen (Valkyrie), Wayne Karmitz (Karma), Mary Minium (Deminium), Kathleen and Carol Milleson (Moseisley, better known as Scheherazad), Barbara Ardoin (Ardoin) and Tom Baumgardner (Folio).

By the 1991 Annual, the Oriental Longhairs had the 25 breeders and more than the 100 registered cats needed for advancement to Provisional status. The only roadblock was the lack of an official CFA breed club and newsletter. At this point I became interested in the longhairs and purchased a Balinese girl to breed to my OSH boys, thinking by the time I had my first longhair, they would already have Championship status. Wrong! The TICA group was gone and getting the breed back on track proved difficult. A club was finally put together by Steve Baylus and Karen Christmann (Balique) and approved by the Board at the 1993 Annual. The Oriental Longhair Cat Club published its first newsletter in the spring of 1994.

Thanks to some last minute lobbying by Bob Agresta at the February, 1994 Board meeting (we weren't on the agenda), Michael Peterson moved for advancement of the OLH to Provisional status. Steve was at this meeting with one cat and he was later appointed OLH Breed Council Secretary. Starting last May, thirty different cats (including six variants) were exhibited in all seven regions. By January 21, 1995, we had done it! (Ironically, Region 3, the birthplace of the OLH, proved the hardest to acquire--Marie and Seance had to fly to the January Houston show!) I showed two cats, and the other breeders who helped out were: Vicki and Steve Baylus; Karen Christmann; Pat DeCano (Casadecano); Cherylee DeYoung (Derry Downs), who also took two cats to the 1994 Annual; Darlene and Jeffrey Fox (Bali-Cats); Nancy Grandison (Balinan), who covered Regions 4 and 6; Chris Norton (Jaimar); Marilyn Small and Marie Surasky.

See you in May!

Though we dabble in rare colors, we did not expect to ever see a classic pop up, especially in the longhairs. But on May 16, 1996, we got two, a blue classic tabby boy and a blue classic (maybe torbie) girl--both look like variants <sigh>. Proud parents are Kathinka and Roitiro. Your mission (if you decide to accept it <g>) is to find out how Kathinka came to carry classic! Roi most likely inherited the gene from Dama; if Mikey was also a carrier I should have gotten classics in HIS litters. FYI, the other kittens are: 2 pointed girls (LH & SH), lavender ticked tabby girl (SH) and blue ticked torbie girl (SH).

In searching for classic Orientals in my database (approx 3800 SH, 200 LH), I found 29 SH and 6 LH (not counting mine), which is less than 1%.

Here's the pedigree:

SIRE:

DAM:

Thinking it's possible that the Javis down from red CPS (particularly Da-Glo) may be the key. But still don't know how Darktree's Hiss in the Night came to carry classic!

Though Dama has been placed as a pet, I have her 2 shaded OSH daughters, and five of her Mikey kids (4 boys, 1 girl).

Let me know what you find. Thanks. Cathy

Since some of you have shown/registered a cat in ACFA over the years and others of you like to know what's happenin', the following may be of interest, given the fact that ACFA finally accepted Oriental Longhairs for Championship status effective May 1, 1996:

On May 12, 1996, SAM BASS OF FOXGLEN (alias "Rakiscats Sam Bass of Foxglen - ACFA refuses to register a "plural" cattery name), a RED POINT Oriental Longhair male, became ACFA's first Grand Champion OLH!!!! (Note: he was also the first OLH registered in ACFA!)

"Sonny" finaled 11 out of 16 rings to achieve the title of GC in two shows! He followed that up with two Allbreed finals in his next show. He then bred an ebony OSH belonging to his owner, Linda Fox (Millsap, TX), producing a litter of 5 variants on 7/25/96: two torties, a tortie point, and ebony and lavender males. (Unfortunately, ACFA doesn't accept short-haired variants for championship competition...)

Sonny is out of Rakiscats Lord Elsun Rabban (red point variant son of Gaynells Aures - For Sale) and CH Derry Downs Tribble of Rakiscats (retired - dam of Clowntown's Gavin, CFA's higheest sccoring OLH kitten to date, with 12 finals).
