3. JOSHUA ASHMORE (James1) son of James Ashmore and Mary _____, born about 1761 in NC and died 8 Jul 1846 in Pope Co., AR. He served in the Revolutionary War at the age of 16. He joined the Presbyterian Church in Green Co., TN about 1788. He moved to KY, then to Lawrence Co., Ky, and about 1840 to AR. (The name Doak or Doke appears in several of Joshua's descendants. I believe that this name comes from Rev. Samuel Doak. I have found no indication that the Ashmores and Doaks intermarried. The name is probably used because Joshua was a devout Presbyterian and named his children after a renowned Presbyterian minister.)
Joshua married Mary _____. She was born before 1775 per the 1820 census, but between 1780 and 1790 per the 1830 census.

The following is the text of a letter written by Ellet to his aunt in Arkansas:
Rock Island Prison
Nov. 6, 1864
Mrs. Elizabeth Ashmore,
Dear Aunt, It is with the greatest pleasure that I assume the liberty of writing you a few lines for the first time in life. Probably you don't remember me. I will inform you that I am a son of James and Elizabeth Ashmore that moved from Tennessee to Miss. in the year '37. I was quite small when my parents emigrated to the state of Mississippi. I learned from a friend a few days since that uncle had departed this life, he also informed me of your place of residence and how to direct a letter that you would get it. In Feb 1862 I enlisted in the Confederate service and in Nov 1863 at Two Knob Mountain Tenn. I was captured by the enemy and was brought to Rock Island Illinois where I have been kept a prisoner of war up to the present time and the Lord only knows how much longer.
I have not heard from home since I was captured form the fact that we have not communication from this to the place of my residence. I have had very bad luck since I have been in prison.
I ------ my wife has departed this life leaving 4 helpless children and I have lost one of my eyes and the other is very weak and I am badly crippled with the rheumatism. Aunt, I am in great need and if you will help me to a suit of gray clothing and some money it will be a great accomodation to me. If you send the things send them by express. I wish I could write more but this is all I am permitted to write at one time. I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours truly
Ellet "Doke" Ashmore
