Hussey means one who wore hose or comes from the house of Houssay (or the Holly Grove) in Normandy, England or from the house of Housay in Scotland.
1. SAMUEL HUSSEY was born about 1741 in Middlesex, England. On December 18, 1764 Samuel along with Simon Jones and Charles Linney, broke in with force and stole three hats with a value of ten pence from a Mr. John Boog. All three were arrested and tried at Quarter Sessions, Middlesex County (London) and were found guilty. Samuel and Simon were transported to the American Colonies aboard the ship "Tryal" in Jan of 1765. It is believed that Samuel arrived at a Maryland port, where he was indentured to a Maryland planter. He became friends with John Turner, a Mestizo (European and Croatan Indian blood). Samuel bought land on the Catfish River, just north of Sellers, SC and married John's daughter Millie.
He was a private in the 3rd Co., 3rd Regiment and a private in Capt. Hawkins Co., 5th Regiment from Maryland in the Revolutionary War. The Fifth Maryland fought with Francis Marion.
Samuel is listed as living alone in Georgetown District, SC in the 1790 census. He is not found in the 1800 and 1810 census but is recorded in the 1809 tax list for Marion Co., SC, owing 10 cents in taxes. Upon his death, his property was divided among his children (office of the Clerk of Court, Marion County, SC, Deed book S, pg 385). There is no record of Millie's death, but Samuel's will is dated 16 Jan 1819. Since no provisions were made for Millie it is believed that she predeceased Samuel.

4. WILLIAM M. HUSSEY (Samuel1) son of Samuel Hussey was born Oct 1796 in South Carolina, died 15 Oct 1875, and was buried in the Hussey Family Cemetery in Banks, Pike Co., Alabama. William was raised in Marion District, South Carolina. The family reportedly came to Pike County, Alabama in 1834. This is supported by the census of Marion Co., South Carolina, as William is listed in 1830 but not in 1840. These censuses show a Robert, John, and Samuel Hussey in Marion District also.
William joined the Primitive Baptist Church in 1825. He received his license to preach in 1829 at the Catfish Creek Baptist Church in South Carolina. William is listed as the minister of the Conecuh Baptist Church in Alabama in 1840 and was a representative to the Conecuh River Baptist Association.
William married in 1819 in Marion District, South Carolina to Elizabeth Carter. She was born about 1783, probably in Marion District, died 23 Aug 1869 and is buried in the Hussey Cemetery. She joined the Primitive Baptist Church in 1826.
