Living in the household in the 1860 census was a Thomas Sanders, born 1834 in Georgia. Jeremiah served in Co. H, 3rd Btn. AL Reserves in the War Between the States, where he served in the defense of Mobile Bay in Ala. He was given a medical discharge. There is a Jeremiah Sanders serving in the 44th Ga Vol. Inf., but he is not thought to be our Jeremiah because of his age.

Martha Smith. She was born about 1815 in Georgia and apparently
died sometime between the 1860 and 1870 census.
A Mary Sanders died intestate in Washington Co., GA. On 27 Mar1843, Lorel Smith was named administrator of her estate. It is not known if these people were related to Jeremiah Sanders or Martha Smith.

7. CHARLES I. SANDERS (Jeremiah2, Burwell1) son of Jeremiah Sanders and Martha Smith, born 9 Dec 1845 in Georgia, died 23 Jan 1921, and is buried in the Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery south of Elba in Coffee Co., Alabama (The church was Mt. Pleasant in 1989, but DePratt lists it as Old Bethlehem Baptist Church in 1976.) The census lists Charles' birth date as Dec 1846, instead of 1845 as shown on his tombstone.
Charles was a member of Co. G 63rd Ala. Inf. in the War
Between the States, and was present at the 1907 reunion held in
Elba, AL (per an article published 1953 in the Elba Clipper.)
Charles enlisted on September 7, 1864. His enlistment papers
say that he was 16 years old, (though this does not match either
of the above birthdates.) His description card lists him as
being 5'8" tall, with blue eyes and light hair. He fought at
Fort Gaines and Spanish Fort, before being sent to Blakely where
he was captured and sent to Ship Island, MS as a Prisoner of War
on April 15, 1865. (He was paroled the following May in
Meridian, MS). It is probable that he could not write. His
parole papers were signed with his mark.
In the 1880 census he is listed as a carpenter living on
Fairview St. in Troy, Alabama. In 1900 he was a merchant and
living on Clayton St. in Elba, Alabama. In 1910 he had moved to
Geneva Co. In 1920 he was living in Coffee Co. with his
daughter Ludie and her husband John Davis.
Charles married 13 Jan 1867 in Pike Co., Alabama to Francis "Fannie" Wealthy Reese, daughter of William Reese and Elizabeth Hussey. She was born 14 Jun 1849 in Alabama, died 22 Jun 1911, and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Cemetery in Coffee Co., Alabama. Oglethorpe's twin brother
William died as an infant. Oglethorpe lived in Dale Co.,
Alabama in 1910. He moved to Mississippi late in life and lived
in Cary and Sharkey Co.

30. JAMES CHARLIE SANDERS (Oglethorpe4, Charles3, Jeremiah2, Burwell1) son of Oglethorpe Sanders and Eva Mae Baston, born 24 Dec 1916 in Clintonville, Coffee Co., AL, died of a heart attack on 13 Mar 1985 in Jackson, Hinds Co., MSi, and was buried 15 Mar 1985 in Green Acres Cemetery in Vicksburg, Warren Co., MS. James was brought to Sunflower Co., MS by his older brother Obed. James was a pipefitter, a Baptist, and was in the Navy during World War II.
James Charlie married 1 Nov 1936 in Anguilla, Sharkey Co., MS to Ruby Elizabeth Hall, daughter of Lee Jackson Hall and Nellie Irene Mauldin. She was born 24 Apr 1922 in Silver City,
Humphreys Co., Mississippi.
Ruby Elizabeth Hall told us that she remembers the first time she saw James Sanders. She had gone to her Aunt Ethel's house to pull corn. James was tan, muscular and very handsome; it was love at first sight. She even went back to school and told her classmates that she had met the man that she was going to marry, even though she couldn't remember his name. They did get married and they moved twelve times the first year they were
married. Their first house had two rooms with shutters, but no
windows. They love each other still, though they are apart.
