McGUFFIE (McGUFFEE and McGUFFEY)
Special thanks to Yvonne McGlothing for her gift of a lifetime of careful, diligent research.
Note that no McGuffees are shown on the census indexes for 1790, 1800, 1850 or 1860 in NC.
1. _____ McGUFFIE. This may be Edmund McGuffee, who is the only McGuffee in the census index for NC in 1810. There are none listed for 1790 or 1800. This may also be Edard [sic] McGuffee who was removed from the tax rolls of Buncombe Co. in 1809 as having left the state (Bailey(2)). Due to circumstantial evidence, such as naming patterns, places of residence, places of birth, relative ages, etc. the following may be brothers.

22. MACK ALBERT McGUFFIE (Burwell2, John1) son of Burwell McGuffie, born 3 Mar 1842-46 in Mississippi and died 18 Feb 1925. Mack's first name has been reported as MacGregor, Macmager or Macmajor. Mack was a member of the 1st Miss State Troops and later of the 3rd Miss. Cavalry during the War Between the States. His muster record describes him as 5 feet 9 inches tall with blue eyes, sandy hair and fair complexion. Mack may have lied about his age to enter the army.
In the 1900 census, he stated that he was born in 1842. He also stated that both his parents were born in Ireland. In his Confederate pension application of 1903, he gives his age as 59 (born 1844). In his Confederate pension application of 1916, he gives his age as 72 (born 1844). Some early census data gives his birth as late as 1846.
Mack married first on 19 Feb 1873 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi to Sarah Chatham. She was born about 1855 in MS. The 1880 census shows a Margaret Williams, age 16, sister, in the household.

Mack married second on 8 Jun 1893 in Warren Co., Misissippi to Theodore "Dutch" James. She was born Feb 1877 in MS and was still living in Jul 1924, when she applied for a CSA widow's pension. Dutch said that she was of German origin, though it is believed that she may have been of Indian descent. Both of her parents were born in MS.
In 1900 a Catherine Pomzer, born Jan 1826 in Germany, was living with Mack and Dutch. Catherine had 8 children, none living in 1900, and had immigrated to America in 1860. John Panzer married 3 Nov 1851 in Warren Co., MS to Catharine Schwab. The 1850 census for Warren Co. (Vicksburg) has: Philip Schwab, 29, Ger, cordwainer at one house and Henry Schwab, 42, Ger, merchant; Eliza Schwab, 38, Ger; Caroline Stifell, 12, MS; and Getta Gilhouse, 19, Ger at another house. Of interest in the search for Dutch's German connection, see the family from Prussia living with Mac's uncle Alfred.
