    Types of Matches Explained

Matches are for practice and experience generally no points or "legs" towards any titles are earned.

    • AKC Matches
An event approved by the AKC and run according to their regulations.
There are the following match plans: A and B (for dog Show Matches) and OA, OB and OC (for Obedience Matches).
A B-OB match would offer both a dog show match and an obedience match.
At B matches, Specialty clubs may offer obedience that is open to all breeds.
Rare breeds are usually welcome if prior arrangements are made with the sponsoring club.

      • Sanctioned A and/or OA Match
A formal event, closely resembling a licensed show or trial.
Required by the AKC for a club to become eligible to hold Licensed events.

      • Sanctioned B and/or OB Match
An informal event. Verbal corrections are allowed, but are penalized.
A judge may permit a handler and dog to repeat an exercise.

      • Plan OC Match effective January 1, 2002.
Show and Go format. There is no requirement for pre-approval by the AKC. Any of the regular or non-regular classes may be offered. In addition, "run-throughs" may be offered where the exhibitor may do all or part of the total exercises from a given class, or the sponsoring club may allow a specific amount of "ring time" desired by the exhibitor.
Corrections are limited to verbal corrections, or gently guiding the dog. At the option of the sponsoring club, food and/or toys may be allowed in the ring. Plan OC Match Regulations

    • Fun Match or Show & Go Match
      A very informal event.
Food or toys are often allowed in the ring.
All-Americans and mixed breeds are usually welcome.

    • Timed Match
A variation of the Show & Go. A timed match is pre-entry only. You are assigned a time for your ring practice session. You have the ring, the judge and the stewards for a certain number of minutes (generally 6 - 10 minutes, depending on the class) and you can do any exercises you want in the ring.

    • Run-Through
Practice session. Someone calls a heeling pattern for the handler and runs the team through the exercises. No judging. There may or may not be ring barriers. There may or may not be group exercises (long sit & long down).
