Boy howdy. I've haven't enjoyed anything so much since the hogs ate my brother. This is one fine peice of cowboy stuff. By the I use to own a cow once, but her owner came by one day and took her back to his place. If you every have the chance to own a cow, don't put her in the pasture next to highway. Keep up the fine work..and I'll be back if the little woman get off my back.

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this visit, here. I just got this computer that I'm on and I had to get my little brother (city boy) to show me how to use it. I typed in cowboy and ya'll popped up. The poems in here are a real hoot. Maybe this computer stuff isn't so bad. just don't tell the other boys that work out here that I said that, I'm liable to be razzed. I bought this thing for my wife and swore that I wouldn't like it. Once again my mouth overriding my ass. I'll talk to ya again soon, again I truly enjoyed myself. thanks. Bob Branson\Broked B ranch, Nevada.

Writin' this from the high country of the British Columbia interior. Lookin' out the window at the first snowfall of the year which seems to have beaten the horses winter coats, taken the cows by surprise and it's makin' me wish I hadn't procrastinated on all the "improvements" I was gonna make this summer. Oh well, got lots of ridin' and explorin' in , did a bit of huntin' and fishin' , trained a colt and got to four cowboy "gatherins". Your site reminds why I keep doin' this. I love your site, especially the link to the old western classic poem of "Face On the Bar-room Floor". My Dad, the late Clyde F. Stewart, used to recite that poem plus "The Cremation of Sam McGee", "The Ballad of Pin Feather Pete", "Dangerous Dan McGrew, and many others to me while I was growing up in the 50s. Dad helped build the first trail to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in the 20s. This was prior to radio and TV and he said he learned the poems from old timers who sat around the campfire at night a d recited poetry to each other... Wish that I had written down all the ones he knew... Many have probably been lost through the years. By the way, I have linked your site to mine at http://geocities.datacellar.net/RainForest/Jungle/6634/

Comments:
Must say ol' girl, I was a might disappointed with your tale of the horny toad. I'm from cow country, the start of the Chisolm Trail. Even the town I live in takes its name from the Spanish for rawhide. And before the fire ants came and might near eat 'em to extinction, I had the pleasure of seein' them toads in my grandpa's garden every summer. They ain't green and they ain't slimy. They're a speckled gray to match the dust with a tail that makes 'em more lizard than toad. Prettiest critters you ever did see, especially when eatin' things that are eatin' your garden. So don't tell that tale down here if you come 'cause it won't wash and it don't hunt. The whole thing's ruined by what you don't know.

Reply to Pinky
Geez, Pinky, I guess you really told me! Too bad you didn't leave your email address so this reply to your comments (above) could have been sent to you privately...but, since you didn't, here goes:
Had you taken the time to view my entire site, you would have on Old West Photos Page 2 found a link to this image of a horned toad. You would have then (I assume) realized that I know full well what a horned toad looks like. Believe it or not, though I'm not on the Chisolm Trail, there are horned toads around here, too. Yes, I have seen them...though I've never kissed one...
Technically, of course, you are correct in stating that a horned toad is not green and is not slimy, and obviously you feel I overly stretched the right of "poetic license" by using the term "horny toad" in the poem KEEP IT UNDER YOUR HAT. You could be right. Perhaps I should have written...the "horniest" toad I've ever seen.... (For some reason that just didn't sound right.)
I assumed most folks are rather forgiving when it comes to cowboy poetry; that most are polite enough not to quickly assume another to be totally ignorant. Looks like I was wrong on both counts. As for what I didn't know, well...you can add that to the list. However, just to set the public record straight, I did (and do) know a "horny" toad when I run across one. I stuck that word in there just to smooth out the meter. So, my friend, maybe it's not that I'm so greatly ignorant about the West, but more that I'm not the greatest poet west of the Chisolm Trail.
By the way, Pinky, how did you get your cute little name?
Sincerely,

Diane Merrill - 08/22/99 09:59:32
