I'm working with a bunch of kids, and their planning to have a western theme night. We're looking for some cowboy jokes. An example would be: Q: Why do cowboys turn-up the side brims of their hats? A: So you can get more than two of them in the cab of a pick-up. Any other suggestions? If you do, remember these are kids.

About 15 years ago a cowboy poet appeared on the Tonight Show and caused Johnny Carson to double up in laughter as he recited his poem concerning the castration of sheep with his teeth. It was one of the funniest things I have ever heard and am wondering if you have heard of it and know where it can be found. I enjoy your site on the net very much and wish we would have the opportunity to see you at one of your performances sometime. Thanks for all the good material.

The Wyoming Companion

It didn't take our Editors too long to agree that your Cowpokin' Fun Web Site DOES deserve The Wyoming Companion's "Best of the West Award"!!! We would appreciate the opportunity to include some of your poetry. The poets we are featuring have either given permission to use poems that are currently on their own personal pages, or have sent us poems via email for our consideration. We don't really have any guidelines per se, but would be very happy to include your work. We do like to include some brief bio material about the poets and we do include links to their web sites if they have them and free email links directly from our Cowboy Poets and Poetry section. Many poets prefer NOT to duplicate something that is already on their own sites since we provide the link back to them. They often send us three or four poems and let us choose which to feature and when. As we hear from more poets we may have the luxury of changing poems every few months.Congratulations on the "Best of the West" award and we look forward to working with you in the future. --Regards

What a wonderful page!!! I'm a third year honours Anthropology student at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. I've been buried under books and books on the traditional cowboy for a term paper I am writing. An increible amount of information I have located, however has been on the commercial cowboy- the Hollywood construct or the modern day country and western music (which, I love, but not what I am researching). I am writing a paper under the working title "Song and Symbol" for a language adn culture course. My prof said "Write about what intersets you." The West it would be. I haev spent many a summer in Oklahoma, experiencing a lifestyle unlike any other place. I am a city girl but deep down, I crave the counrty. My essay is built upon the words on the cowboy him/herself. What the songs and stories and cattle brands reveal about the life on the range. Any information I have found, has been about Him, it was a treat to find your page. If I may, cite some of the works from the page, I think they would enhance my essay, and more as I enjoy the pitcures and stories.

Hi Carol. I am a first time surfer on the net and I enjoyed your poetry. I'm looking for a poem that talks about a feller who is hauled in to court for poaching an endangered species like a spotted owl. The judge is about to let him off but asks him what it tasted like? The poacher says "something between spotted owl and bald eagle". I have heard Joe Hannah of the Sons of the San Joaquin recite it in a concert. If you could help me find this poem I would really appreciate it. We have two record albums and have released two singles of songs I wrote in Europe that got quite a bit of air play. We put on a Cowboy Jubilee every Friday and Saturday at the Historic Pioneer Opera House in St. George, Utah. We have a Dutch oven supper followed by a Western Music show featuring my family. Our group is named Rydin' High and we are professional members of the Western Music Association. If you come through on I-15 we are 100 miles north of "Lost Wages", (Las Vegas) Nevada. If you are passin' through we would like to hear you recite and would make time for you at the beginning of our show. We'll be glad to offer you a great meal and some good western music. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance. Keep Rydin' High!

Carol, You know I also write military poetry, and after talking to a bunch of other vets today, my mind has been on things that happened a very long ways away from this land of ours. I'm attaching a poem which has been recited at military bases all over this U.S.of A. I wrote it about 1989 and all the vets think it really tells it like it is. After reading it you will understand why I write Cowboy poetry, it's from a more happier and innocent time when my biggest worry was whether I'd get enough to eat. I think it's super what you are doing to promote such good feelings about a lifestyle most people know so little about. Of course, most people have no idea just how much work is involved, and how many hours. When I worked on this one fence line, I was the maul man and planted a stake every three steps. My day started at daybreak and ended when the sun went down. I was paid $2.50 a day, which was different than when I was busting broncs where I got paid by the month (if there was any money). Hard work, and all of us loved every minute of it. I've been bit, kicked, stomped on, rolled on, and even run up a tree by a steer who had never seen anybody afoot before, but I was one happy cowpoke. Keep doing what you're doing Carol, you make a lot of people happy. Bob

Carol Tallman Jones--Thanks. I am a prettus successful outdoor writer in florida. I am a Field editor for Florida Sportsman magazine and the outdoor editor for a daily newpaper. I love my Florida outdoors. But, you see, I was raised in Lubbock, Texas. I left to go in the service with many other young men in the late 60's, and my trail just never turned back that way. But that doesn't mean that I still don't live by a "look em in the eye, and shake a hand" cowboy creed. I adore and still respect the "cowboy" attitude. I believe it is real! In his younger days, my dad worked cattle spreads in the sand around Clovis and in the panhandle of texas. He later put on a policemans uniform in Lubbock and wore it till he died. But, he constantly pushed the cowboy attitude. I have won awards and am pretty well lauded for my efforts as an outdoor writer, but I must tell you that I am completely envious of your "cowboy talent". Your web site is a "going back home" escape for me. Thanks.     Al Hubbard

I love your web page! I've seen them all tonight while trying to find a poem or two that would be appropriate for a cowboy's funeral. Our 93-year old grandfather passed away Friday morning - he was the last one of a great generation of true cowboys in town. We wanted to read something appropriate to honor his life of ranching, fencing, drinkin' and chasin' the women... Anyway, someone tells me there's a poem called the Cowboy's Prayer. Do you know it? Can you help me find it or something else that would be appropriate? I would be greatly obliged. Thanks! Carol

Did you ever get this reply to your letter? I just noticed a new folder in my Outlook Express mail program and when I looked inside it I found this letter. I'm expermenting with MSIE 4 Beta version, so have to work around a few bugs. Hope it's a fluke and you did receive my reply in time for the funeral. If not I'm really sorry. I honestly did answer it as soon as I received it. Tell your dad to hang in there and you guys have a good one. --cj
[initial reply June 16, 1997] Thought I should answer this ASAP. I'm not sure if this is the one you're looking for or not, but here goes:---

COWBOY'S PRAYER
Oh, put my spurs upon my breast
My rope and saddle tree
And while the boys lay me to rest
Go turn my horses free.

There have been several written over the years. Two quite renown, one by CURLEY FLETCHER and the other by BADGER CLARK. If the above isn't what you had in mind, email me tomorrow. I'll try going through some of my books to find them for you. --Best Wishes --cj

Webmaster's note:   This emailed note was most likely sent by someone more interested in being a SADDLESORE than a cowboy. How's about we all drop them a line and express our view on this?   cj

Pablo and Julie Hidalgo

Hi there, Carol...My name is Julie Hidalgo, and I have a request for you. My father is desparately looking for an old poem, and I was wondering if you could help. He heard this many times from his uncle, and some of the words stuck. However, many did not! Now, he is looking for the rest of the words, and has had no luck. Maybe, with your background in rural poetry, you could help. The poem is called "The Town of Jop", and is a humorous tale about the plight of a lost man who asked a local for directions. My dad found an older man in the area who also knew some of the poem. It filled in some gaps, but not all. The other man remembers that the poem ran in the 1920's or 1930's in a Canadian farm paper, potentially the Western Producer or The Co-operator. I was wondering if you had ever heard of this poem, and if you could e-mail me if you have. It would mean a lot to me, and even more to my dad. Thank-you in advance!   Julie Hidalgo
P.S. Loved your home page - the running Odie is wonderful!   JH

REPLY: Sorry, but I've never heard of the poem you're looking for. I called my mom, since she was around during that era, but no luck. She hasn't heard of it either. Maybe some nice soul on the web will contact you with the answer.... Good luck in your quest.   cj

[in reply to my "raves" about his fabulous homepage --LINK coming soon!] Spongy brained... I am stunned and most humbled by your note about my web page. Somewhat like ol' Joe Young, I am most anxious to pay my 80 bucks! Thank you for your open and honest sincerity. I like to write about things that mean something. If my meager attempt at it has been a boon to you then, ma'am, by all means link to my page. If I might be so bold as to ask...may I add a link to yours? That is where the real talent lies. I have spent many an enjoyable hour at your site and would like to be able to share it with others. As to the question of Fruitcakes...hmmm...if only there were more such as yourself, this world would be a much saner place. I don't really know what to say about myself. I'm just an average guy...I'm not good at speaking of myself. Perhaps my writing says a little about me, it is taken mostly from my experiences. If there is anything you would like to know about me though, don't hesitate to ask, I just don't know where to begin. Again, thanks for the wonderful email! ...and don't be a stranger, we'll leave the light on for ya.    Chuck

Howdy CJ, I was back just browsing around your site (you've got a really fun site, I haven't had time to look at everything yet but I really like it!), anyway, just had to tell you I LOVE your graphic of the cowboy with a calf in the saddle. I was raised on a cattle ranch in the Colorado mountains and have done that exact thing more than once. The first time was with a newborn, slippery wet, freezing calf to bring it and the mother back down into the calving barn. But I was out riding around just bareback when I found the heifer calving. So it was real tricky for me to get the calf onto my mare's back, hold it on while I jumped up behind, and then keep a hold of it for the ride back. (I wasn't a real big person - 5'2" and just 105 pounds.) My mare seemed to understand and much to my relief didn't give me any grief. Your graphic reminds me of those fun times! And I love your stock dog's name. I had a blue heeler for many years and he was my devoted companion and protector until his death. Now I have an Aussie and he's also a wonderful, devoted, intelligent companion. He and I had lived alone for several years before I married and without question or jealousy he's accepted my husband and each of our two babies as they were born. Well, better go, but just had to tell you how much I love your graphic! Take care! Best Regards, Cindy

I was greeted by some great music I hadn't heard in years. It reminded me how great it was when I was a kid and a young adult. I had a lot of fun at dances, rodeo's, and riding around the area. Met great people and made some wonderfull friends. I guess it's time to get back to old style of life, and enjoy life once again. Thanks!

Just a brief note to tell you my hat's off to you for the wonderful job you've done with your website. Found it on a web search for cowboy humor and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I work with a bunch of ol cowpoke wannabees, and I'm specifically looking for a poem or joke or a good comeback for those damn tall hats they wear! Seems the size of the hat is some sort of reflection directly proportionate to the size of the ego under it. Have you ever written, or know of someone who has written, something humorous about this observation? Big hat no cows kinda thing? I'm gettin damn tired of them always pokin fun at me and my lack of a hat. I've been around cows and horses and cowboy wannabees my whole life, and would like a good comeback for the next time they start razzin me! Please help me if you can. I'd really like to put them in their place and you seem like a good one to ask. Sincerely, Loretta - A Lady Cowgirl

Hello, Carol, I am a member of the Sunrise Rotary in Tucson Arizona. Annually we sponsor a trailride to raise funds that support local needy causes. Riders come from a number of states and it is a successful event. As entertainment coordinator this year, and having a background in farming and ranching, I thought a cowboy poet would be a wonderful addition to the event for an evening around the campfire. We of course have a very limited budget and are looking for a local poet. We would hope they could perform for a minimal fee or donate time for the cause. The big question is do you have contacts with Arizona (specifically Tucson) poets that might be contacted. Of course, you would be great to have but distance could make this out of our reach. A woman poet would really be fun since so many Rotatians are male and we (the few women) are always given such a hard time. Please contact us with information. Thank you!! AMc

Hi, your site is one of the best put together ones on the Net. I'm a storyteller and yarnspinner on the southern coast of Oregon (Coos Bay). Just did a show called Prairie Dog Tales & Sagebrush Whispers. They were stories written by Rob Robles in Arizona and he graciously gave me permission to adapt them to storytellin'. Dear Ms. Jones, Thank you for the great entertaining Web Site!! First, I am not a cowboy. I spent my "working years" in a much "safer" environment. I worked in the "oil patch". We, my family and I, spent some 25 years working and living in Kansas and Oklahoma, Argentina, Libya, Iran, Scotland, Kuwait and Oman. We now live in Ozark, Mo. where I work part time in a nursing home in the maintenance dept. At the "Home", I have some resident friends who really enjoy the humor and poetry I bring in from time to time. One lady is an old cowgirl from Oklahome who really appreciates the cowboy/girl poetry and humor. Her name is Pat Sisson. I'm not sure of Pat's age, upper 70's - low 80's, I'd guess. Pat suffers from emphysema and must stay hooked up to an oxygen concentrator all the time. Her biggest enjoyment is reading and watching rodeos on her TV. When I took the, "Hobo Stew", recipe into her, we both got an extra laugh at the footnote you had placed at the bottom regarding the "plastic lid". Now judging from your photograph, you are obviously a young "filly" and don't recall the coffee cans of your grandmother's time. "Back in the good old days", there weren't any plastic lids. The lids were metal and sealed on the cans. On the bottom of the can was a metal "key" with which one rolled off the metal strip that sealed the can. Kinda like a can of sardines. I'm sure someone has already pointed this out to you, but just in case they haven't..... Thanks again from all the folks at the Home! Respectfully, Bill Edwards

I have heard about a poem about The Face On The Bar Room Floor. I don't know the author. I do know that there is a face on a bar room floor somewhere in the West that the poem was written about. A very good friend of mine's father use to know all of the verses. He has passed away and my friend would love to have a copy of this poem. I would love to give my friend this copy for Christmas. Can you help?
Tuesday, October 14, 1997 11:33 AM
[condensed replies] The author of The Face On The Bar Room Floor is a gent named Darcy. And yes, the face does exist. It's painted on the floor of the Teller House, a bar in Central City Colorado. A cowpoke I know has this poem memorized. He plans to visit me on the 15th of December and has agreed to recite it for me, so I can transcribe it. I'll email you a copy as soon as possible after his visit. Hope that works for you. :-) cj

Do you have any suggestions for researching the source of some cowboy poetry I found among my fathers momentos from his Dad Bert Rollins. There are about 30 pages of typewritten cowboy poetry from the 1800's and handbound with wire. Some of the names mentioned are Frank King and George Saunders. My grandfather was with the Buffalo Bill Cody Show and worked on his guest ranch in Nebraska. The poetry is pretty incredible. The person who typed the notes on the top claims to have known Butch Cassidy, Calamity Jane, etc. But nowhere is mention who this person is, although other people's names are included from time to time. Is there a book source of published cowboy poetry of 1800's. If not, this stuff needs to get to a publisher. It appears to be very accurate, even names and stats of Bucking Bronco champions of 1932. I know my grandfather rode bucking broncos in the Cody show and shot six-shooters in same showing his marksmanship. My grandmother also worked in the show as a dancer. Anyway, would appreciate if you have any ideas to get me started in the right direction.

Hi, I just came across your website; it's truly wonderful. Would you happen to know where I would be able to get an address to sent ' cowboy ' cards through e-mail? It would be nice if they were all occasion cowboy cards but at this point, I would be very happy to see even ONE card that was cowboy-related... thank you.... :o)

One of the best cites on the web. I really enjoyed this sight. I have written much poetry none of which I was paid for. Every week I have handed out a poem to folks at the Senior center.

One Click Away

Hi There. Your Web site is in a list of "reviewed sites" maintained by the MSN Internet Guide "One Click Away." That means you've either already been featured on OCA or are going to be featured in the next few months. Or, we just like your site and we decided to keep a review on file. OCA is an e-zine about the Internet and Net Culture. Our primary goal is to let people in on what's happening on the Web, what's useful, what's fun, sites that must be seen, etc. etc... I'm mailing you because your being in our database means we're interested in an ongoing way what happens at your Web site. If you ever want to let us know about anything new or different going on there that you'd like to see featured on OCA, consider this the red carpet. We're interested in linking to Web sites that have something of value for our visitors. (BTW: Feel free to visit us (http://oneclick.msn.com) but please be advised that our testers focused on OCA's compatibility with the most common PC configurations -- Netscape 4+, IE3+ or IE4, on machines running Windows or NT. OCA also requires some plug-ins, such as Macromedia Flash and Real Audio. Apologies if you're not set up to view this content.)

Carol You do not have a homepage here, you have a home magazine! It is so great. I particularly enjoyed the photo essay. The section featuring other poet's work is an act of sacrifice above and beyond--even though it must be fun to look at the submissions.

It's great to find old cowboy things in this new modern world. I love the cowboy life, but am stuck in the fast pace of life. Would love to chat awhile with other cowpokes.

Thank you for over one hour of enjoyment as I toured your web site. Your stories and poems took me back to my youth and my days on the farm. And as I read our old neighbors just seemed to pop up in several of them. I discovered my enjoyment of "Cowboy Poetry" several years ago when I met Baxter Black. Haven't seen the old coote, I wonder where he's at? I, by times, sit down and "pen" some poem stories myself, but it is usually for some special ocassion and not on a regular basis. Maybe you will be the stimulation I need to do more of it. I shall return, more tales to learn.
And the guy from back east just sat there and chuckled And smiled as he looked at his boots and belt buckle. His only tie to the west where he might have been born, But he was reared in the east on a big dairy farm. Yet, he is content to read stories like Carol's, And Baxter's, n' Woodies, n' old mean weird Harolds. Cause God put him there to do things only he could do So he does them with gladness and let's God his life rule. Thanks, Larry
