The End of an Oasis and Whammy!
Lately there have been two major fronts in the game show world. The first one I'll
start with is what I call "The End of an Oasis." This is of course referring to the
disappearance of game shows in primetime. Millionaire has been reduced to one
night a week, (not that anyone is watching), and no one is sure, not even ABC, of
what role the show will play in Fall 2002. The only other form of a game is NBC's
Weakest Link, and that show hasn't been on air with normal contestants since
who knows when, not to mention that NBC keeps pulling the show from Monday's. The fact
is that we are on the last leg of an amazing period for game shows on network television, and
there's nothing we can do about it except begin reminiscing about the memories
that have been created. I still have all of the articles and spreads done by newspapers
and magazines about the Millionaire craze, and their spinoffs. Was Millionaire
killed off too quickly. Yeah. But, it will debut this fall in syndication, and that will be
the true test of how the audience will be willing to accept it. The other front, which
has none of the publicity, but probably the most passion about it is the revival
of Press Your Luck. Whammy! will debut on April 15 on Game Show Network, and
there is already people saying that it's the worst thing since Match Game '98. Hold
on folks! According to people who attended pilot tapings, the show is very much faithful
to the original, and Todd Newton does a terrific job. The show's pitchman is a dedicated
game show fan who has been working to keep the show true to it's roots. So, all I'm saying
is give Whammy! a chance.
