Letters by John Byrd Foster

Baraack 47 R. I. Prison March 6th 1865

Miss P. Brunley, My Dear Friend, The mail came in today
but I a poor unfortunate did not get any letters nor
have I received one from any of my friends in a week.
What are you all doing, are you going to balls with
Mrs. (Name unreadable) or have you all gone out in the
Country to help Mrs. Blackburn make Maple sugar?
The express mail came in today also but didn't bring
the $16.00 sent by Miss Pugh. I suppose it is lost. She had best
call on the express agent at that place and make him
refund before it is too late. Complaint must be made
within 30 days from the date at which it was expressed, I Think.
What is Miss Lucy doing, is she knitting as usual?
You do not tell me how Miss Bacon is getting along.
We are having a dull time here now. I would not ob-
ject to a pocket edition of the Rip Van Winkle nap du-
ring the rest of my sojourn here.___ I understand
there is no exchange on hand, that it is nothing but
a parole. What do you hear about it? We don't read
newspapers here. --Contraband-- Prisoners have
blankets and clothing issued to them as they leave here
by paroled Confederate Officers who are here for that purpose.
They are yet leaving very fast, 500 leave
today. I have not forgotten that you promis-
ed to introduce me to our friends down there.
I will put you to the trouble to comply with
your promise just as soon as the war is
Over. When will it end? - When ! - Be sure to
write on the day you get this. Your Friend (signed) J. B. Foster
