A Walk With Ms. Kitty

Page 5

Patches has such a sweet face and her coat is always well groomed with black patches on pure clean soft furry white. BUT, like I said, she is Ms Kitty's enemy. Patches is bigger than Ms Kitty and she wants to claim Ms Kitty's territory. Patches isn't a BAD cat; just doing what comes naturally, and Ms Kitty is just doing what comes naturally trying to defend her territory. She really would be at the mercy of Patches if Patches ever got hold of her. Ms Kitty can sometimes scare Patches away by running a bluff of hissing and savagely showing her very sharp teeth and threatening with her claws. If that doesn't work she starts a mighty growling and an elongated

errrroooooowwwwwww which can indeed be an unearthly sound. This sample is just an idea of how it sounds in case you have never heard one. [Would you believe that I had never heard a cat caterwallowing until I was in my 30's??] It can start out really low, so low that it seems more like a vibration, and it can reach a high whail almost like a siren; according to how much the cat is agitated. It can last so long you wonder if it will ever take a breath.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If her bluff fails, she takes off and runs to her safe place, closed in area under the neighbors porch where she can wait until Patches leaves. Ms Kitty likes us to go for walks with her as she knows that if we see Patches infringing, we will shew her away. We are bigger than Patches. We would like it if they could get along, but it seems that both of them are loners and Patches has another home, so we can't take her in to try to reconcile them. She seems to live a few blocks North East of us as that is the direction from which she comes, and the direction she heads when she leaves.

Ms Kitty starts up the hill stalking Patches and trying to look menacing thinking that her very panther like actions would frighten Patches away. After all, sometimes it worked!

The other day Old Man Winter brought an ice storm to the area and the trees had become so laden with ice that many branches had broken from the weight. One fairly large branch had fallen on the lattice fence that I had built as a wind break for the herb garden. Patches thought she was pretty well hidden near the fallen fence. She sensed a movement to her right and sure enough there was Ms Kitty coming up the hill looking quite deadly. Ms Kitty looked so intense that Patches began to feel very vulnerable.

She also noticed at the same time, that I

had spied her.
