Chapter IVNew Things to Think Aboutand Friends to VisitPage 29 |
This pretty little Gray or Cat Squirrel has a mate and they love to chase one another all over the yard and through the trees. This one has an almost pure white tummy, the hairs on the sides of the tail are white and so are tufts on the ears. The rest of its body is a fresh looking soft gray. We have lived in this same spot for 22 or more years and this year is the first time we have had the pleasure of a pair of greys. Plenty of Reds, and once a single black, but no Grey Cat Squirrels. My Grand daughter's husband told me last week that he saw a flying squirrel in a friends yard, and he had never seen one in the area before. Probably more but just not noticed. They all love the Black Oil Sunflower Seed! Especially if it is in the special treat mix I mentioned earlier.

Here is the mate. The colors are better in this picture than the one above..

Squirrels are not always polite to one another nor other beings. The mates are lunching together now, but in a minute one of them will chase the other away. It's part of the animalistic instinct of survival of the fittest. Most human beings have evolved to where they think of others besides themselves and are more willing to share their resources with family members and others who are less fortunate. That is one of the differences between Animals and People.
