New Things to Think About

and Friends to Visit

This little fellow is a Red Bellied Woodpecker. Why they are called that I have no idea, as the 'bellie' is not red! only the back of the head and neck!

There seems to be only one pair at this time, March 11, 2001 and they have been here since in early December that I know of. They, too, like the Sunflower seeds and also the bird treat. They or their descendants have been here every year for years.

Here he is enjoying the suet treet I put out on the post for him and the Blue Jays. Of course, all the birds share all the feeding stations, so one can see any of them at any of the stations.

Mrs. Red Bellied Woodpecker also enjoys the suet treet hanging on the clothes line. The daddy has a full cap of red on down his neck and the momma has the red just on the back of her head and partly down her back. she is not quite as colorful as the male. The juveniles are kind of brown before they get their colors.

This little fellow is between 7 and 8 inches long.

Female Red Bellied Woodpecker seems tobe a bit smaller than the male above.
