WILD FLOWERS OF EAST TEXAS

A small collection of plants found by Leona Halley Henderson

This pretty lavender/pink sorrel likes semi shade and likes to grow in the woodsy areas here in East Texas clear over into the hill country. The bloom is deep throated and opens beautifully, but hard to get a truly three dimmensional on a flat scan. This one came up on its own at the edge of the path of my lower circle. I Don't have very many of them, so try to protect the ones that do show up. The plant is perenial like other Oxalis. These and the yellows bloom nearly all summer here.

11 Nov 1999 Henriette Kress also notes, 'Wood-sorrel is Oxalis acetosella, and yep, that looks like one.' Again, thank.,

Venus' Looking Glass is such a tiny little plant that it may be over looked.. It is so delicate and bright, though, that it is worth looking for.. They bloom from about April through May and while the blooms on this plant was a bit over 1/4 of an inch across, some areas can boast blooms to about 3/4 of an inch.

Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea)

AKA Gil-O'er-the-ground and Ale Hoof

This little plant loves the shade and will not tolerate hot sun. It makes a pretty ground cover in the shady areas, but pretty much goes dormant in the winter. It has a square stem and a not too unpleasant scent and flavor, almost like camphor, so am assuming it is of the mint family. [12 Nov 1999, Henriette varified that it is of the Labiatae fa,ily.] 11 Nov 1999 Henriette Kress says,"This is Glechoma hederacea, ground ivy.'
Thanks again, Henriette.

I remember the name Ale Hoof and Gill-o'er-the-ground, especially the Gill..etc, as I had discovered it about the same time as I did the Cleavers. Used them, the cleavers, oxalis, chickweed, and some dandelion added to bib lettus and tomato/onion salad. See Alehoof on the herb page for more information.

Bonica is a florabunda rose ..

[ Bonica, a floribunda rose ] .. which is a cultivar, but it was blooming so beautifully I couldn't resist getting a scan of it and a sprig of dusty miller. That is one of the most beautiful plants in my garden. Have two of them and they are covered, literally, with these gorgeous pink clusters and they bloom clear to frost if they are fed properly! In the same bed with them is dustymiller and Mexican marigold Mint and with those silvers, greens and pinks, it is so pretty that it makes a lump in my throat I am so touched by their beauty. I just had to share Bonica with you.

DEWBERRY (Rubus trivialia) These little berries come up wild in my flower beds and anywhere they can find a bit of open soil...or not.. This one is not yet ripe. It will be nearly black when it is. They make delicious cobblers as well as juice. Various birds enjoy them. I nearly broke all my ribs having tripped on a vine of them. My hands were bad and I couldn't use them to catch myself so fell full weight onto my chest! Since then I have a hard time convincing Ivan to let them grow! He's afraid I will do it again! Told him my Momma didn't raise no idiots! I really watch out for them now! Won't do it a second time! [dewberries]
