Maybelleine, or May, for short, is my Grandpa's first baby donkey. She was born April 18, 2000, and Dandy is her father. Her mother is Darlin, another of my Grandpa's donkeys, but Darlin isn't as friendly as Dandy or May. Grandpa says that he thinks that someone who owned Darlin before he did wasn't very nice to her, and now she's kind of scared of people. I think that's really sad, and I'm glad that she has a good home with Grandpa and Grandma now! May is a very sweet donkey too, and she really likes to get pets! Ever since she was born, Grandpa has gone out to pet her and get her used to him, and she really likes people. We were just a little bit surprised that May wasn't a spotted donkey too, since Darlin and Dandy both are, but she's black, and I think she's very pretty. She's still too little to ride, but her favorite thing right now is to eat peppermint candy, so I give her candy and pet her a lot. Grandpa says that's really good, because it helps her be used to people, and it makes her friendlier. May went to her very first donkey show at the Beautiful Burro Contest last year! It was held in the Victoria Zoo, and May was afraid to go across the sidewalks to get to the show pavillion. Since she wouldn't do that, she won Most Obstinate Donkey at the show, which means that Grandpa got a trophy and some feed for her. Grandpa said that even though May wouldn't go across the sidewalks, he thinks she did really well at the show, because it was the first time she'd ever been around a lot of people and other donkeys. I think so too! Here are some pictures of May!This is May and Darlin, just a few hours after May was born. Me petting May for the very first time! In this picture, she's almost two months old. Mommy petting May while we were at the Beautiful Burro Contest! Don't they look funny together? I think May was trying to get more peppermints! Grandpa and May with her award for Most Obstinate Donkey at the Most Beautiful Burro Contest. Not too long ago, my grandpa traded May to a friend of his for another donkey. May has a good home though, and I'm sure the lady who has her now is very happy with her! |
