The Ivess Family History |
“Sliprail” writes: The marriage of Mr. Con. Ivess, of Pimpinio, and Miss Hanora Ridley, third daughter of Mr. and the late Mrs. Ridley, of New South Wales, and niece of Mrs. Hodby of Pimpinio, was celebrated at the Roman Catholic Church, Horsham on Tuesday, April 10th. Rev Father Galligan was the officiating clergyman. Miss Grace Millar, of Jeparit, was the only bridesmaid, and Mr Dick Walsh lent first aid to the bridegroom as best man. A wedding breakfast was partaken of at Hennessy’s Exchange Hotel. Less than twenty guests, including Mr. and Mrs. Hennessy, sat down at Mrs. Hodby’s invitation to eat, drink and be merry, and fittingly celebrate the occasion at her expense. The banquet was a very sober one, principally on account of the guilty couple having to catch the mid-day train for Melbourne, where the honeymoon was spent.. At a present day wedding of this description one grown retrospective. This writer can recall the time when another of his mates was getting married in happier days. He laid aside his belltopper and thanked three hundred guests for being present at his nuptials. When a man of marriageable age, or rather, I should say, military age – there being no age restriction in a man’s fitness for matrimony – takes a wife, he does it quietly, almost secretly, as if he were guilty of wrong doing. Everybody seems serious and sober (especially when a midday train has to be caught). “Truly, the days that are, are not like the days that were.” Rev. Father Galligan presided at the banquet, and in a happy though brief speech, on account of time limit, wished Mr. and Mrs. Ivess all the good things of this world. The rev. gentleman, who is new to Horsham, complained about the number of single men amongst his parishioners, and hoped the good example Mr. Ivess set would be an incentive to others. The happy man, who had conducted himself as nonchalantly throughout the ceremony as if marriage was an everyday occurrence (it has been just about an everyday occurrence amongst people of this district of late), returned thanks on behalf of his wife and himself. Mr. J. B. Kelly proposed the health of the Bridesmaid, and Mr. Walsh responded. It is unnecessary to state that the bride acted her part to perfection. Brides always seem to act as if they had been married twenty or thirty times previously. For the benefit of your lady readers the description of the dresses worn by the bride and bridesmaid is supplied. The bride wore a costume of navy blue chiffon taffeta with smart hat of vieux rose panne, trimmed with gold military braid, and wore a diamond ring and pearl star-pendant, the gifts of the bridegroom, and carried a white ivory prayer book. The bridesmaid Miss Grace Millar of Jeparit (cousin of the bride), wore a tailored costume of navy gabardine, hat of navy blue glace silk, trimmed with musquash and oriental braid, she also wore the bridegroom’s gift, a gold brooch.
