Hugh was a favorite of King Edward II after the death of Piers Gaveston. He took much land in the Welsh marches, which led to an uprising that Hugh defeated in 1322. When Isabella and Mortimer returned to England and deposed Edward II, Hugh and his father were hanged. Alice Lacy, wife of Thomas of Lancaster, fled to the Earl of York, which began the hostilities between those two families known as the War of the Roses.
