Soon after becoming king Childeric became infatuated with his subjects who said he "brought dishonor to" their daughters. He was forced to give up the throne, and discovered a plot to assassinate him. He fled to Thuringia and took refuge with King Basinus and his wife, Basina. The king the Franks chose turned out to be too cruel, so they soon asked Childeric to return. After Childeric was restored to the throne, Basina left Basinus and married Childeric.
