One summer a ship from Iceland carrying skins for sail arrived at Hardanger. There were a great number of people, but none would buy the skins. The steersman implored King Harold to help. Harold visited the ship and asked if the steersman would make a gift of a gray pelt. The man agreed and soon all of Harald's men bought gray skins just like the one wore by Harald. In a few days so many people had come to buy skins that not half could be served. After that incident Harold was known as Harold Grafeld (Graypelt).

Harald had about eighteen wives and several children with each.

After being rejected by Princess Gyda for ruling too small of a kingdom, he swore to conquer the whole of Norway or die trying. He also swore that he would neither cut nor comb his hair until the task were done. Soon he was called "Lufa (with rough matted hair)". After he had succeeded in conquering Norway, Orkney, and the Hebrides, his friend Earl Rognvald the Wise finally cut and combed his hair. The people thought it was the most beautiful hair they had ever seen, and began calling him "Harald Harfager (finehair or fairhair)".
