Gruffydd was totally ruthless, his hands stained with the blood of rivals and opponents. He was probably already established in Powys, and when Iago ap Idwal of Gwynedd was killed by his own men in 1039, an act to which Gruffydd may have been an accomplice, he emerged as claimant to the northern kingdom. He fought for fifteen years to rule all of Wales, and finally succeeded when he drove Hywel ap Edwin from Deheubarth.

Gruffydd formed an alliance with Aelfgar, son of the Earl of Mercia, against Harold, Earl of Wessex (later King Harold II). After Harold became king and Aelfgar became Earl of Mercia, Harold decided to rid himself of the pest from Wales. He formed a large army and attacked by land in the winter of 1062. Gruffydd managed to escape by sea, but in the summer of 1063 Harold attacked by both land and sea. Gruffydd moved into central Wales where he was killed by his enemies.

Gruffydd's death left Gwynedd and Wales in a weakened state, completely unprepared for the Norman invasian soon to come.
