Story
of the Accident. Early on the morning of the 15 of October 1998 Stephanie scurried quietly around the bedroom trying to get everything ready for work without waking the others. Stephanie was a traveling nurse working her way around the country. This was here parents place where her uncle stayed also. She had planned it this way, Starting out in Washington State, where she and her husband shut down a thriving sign business because of illness, went to southern California and then Missouri. A grand daughter was about to make her appearance on the stage of life not far away, and this is one event Stephanie had no intentions of missing. Steph made her way through the dark house to the door passing the empty kitchen table where a month or so earlier Stray would have had a hot breakfast made for her. Stray is a strange nick name to have, but that is what her husband went by, but seems as if he come by it honestly since here they were straying around the country together. Stray had traveled back to southern California for health reasons among others. No time for breakfast not even time to clean up the bedroom since she had worked late the night before and the night before that, and before that things were kind of blurry, who knows, who cares. "I'll just stop by and pick something up at the little convenience store at the corner on my way to work" she thought to herself as she shut the cold metal door behind her and shivered as she walked across the driveway where her van was parked. The starting of the engine broke the night silence and the familiar tunes emanating from the radio brought back comforting memories as she let the engine warm up a minute before starting out. Little did she know that the journey she was embarking on as she put the van in gear would take her much farther than she had ever expected, and change her life dramatically forever. The stones made a crunching sound as the tires rolled over the graveled driveway that led down to the road that went by the house she took to go to work. Automobile head lights from some other drive way gave Stephanie comfort in knowing that she was not the only one getting up at these hours to go to work. Stephanie was not fond of getting up in the morning, if she had her way getting up in the afternoon would do just fine thank you. The inside of the van was warming up and the chill was dissipating as she envied those she had left in the house all snug and warm in their beds blissfully dreaming undisturbed for another hour of so. Black top showed up in the beam of the head lights giving warning that arrival at the main road was immediate. One swipe with the wind shield wipers made it easier to see the road as the van came to a halt at the intersection. The convenience store was just across the road and Stephanie could just taste the muffin and fruit juice she had come to anticipate just before her long drive on the twisty narrow road to work. Looking to the right for on coming traffic Stephanie noticed that the windows had fogged up. The seat belt tighten preventing her from reaching the window handle, she quickly clicked the button and belt snapped free allowing Stephanie to roll down the window giving her a clear view of the road on the passenger side. What she did not see is a set of headlights approaching from the right at a high rate of speed. By the time Stephanie looked right the car had disappeared into a dip just small enough just to hide the headlights. Stephanie moved her foot from the break and depressed the accelerator. to be continued...... Photo's of Stephanie |
