Every year for the last 45 (or so) years the Burton Family has made it a point to get together once each year for an event known generically as "The Family Picnic". In the early years it involved an all-day excursion to Potowatami Park outside of St. Charles, IL. I suspect the main reason for that was because no one in the family owned their own home, much less a spread big enough to accomodate the ever-growing herd of attendees. In recent years the trend has been toward gathering at the homes of some of the more prosperous members of the clan.
Regardless of the setting, the Family Picnic is an event I always look forward to. Because we live so far from the rest of the family, we don't get to attend every year, however, this year the event coincided with our vacation making it one of the highlights of our trip to Chicago.
We were fortunate to get an invitation for an evening sail on Lake Michigan from Tony's dad, Joe on his sailboat. We left the harbor about 5 PM (after a brief swim from the boat) and headed out onto the lake. It was impressive seeing the Chicago skyline from this unique perspective.
We sailed down the lakefront from Belmont Harbor all the way down to the Shedd Aquarium and the Chicago Yacht Club and then slid in near Navy Pier.
By the time we were wending our way back to the harbor, we had watched a dramatic sunset and dusk had settled in creating a unique view for us. As we reached the harbor, the evening fireworks were exploding in the sky above Navy Pier; the perfect finale to a perfect evening sail!
