If you are considering buying a Bouvier des Flandres, do not think of it as just like any other working dog, but as a creature as distinctive and as impressive as a rare diamond... for like a diamond, the Bouvier is precious to its owner and will endure and win his heart and loyalty forever. Once won by a true Bouvier, he will be spoiled for any other breed . . . according to Bouvier owners . . . none can compare!

We say "True" Bouvier, for as with other breeds, there are outcasts and criminals just as there are in the human race. There are misfits and forlorns, so see to it that your initial small investment in the best Bouvier you can find will repay you in 10 to 12 years of dividends and interest. See to it that you do your homework on the breed, research and study the lines of different breeders, talk to people who own one, and don't rush off and buy the first puppy that comes available.

You do not have to reserve your puppy from one who has been "in it" a long time, but older breeders have usually passed over the mistakes that newcomers to breeding might make. You should get your puppy from one who has done "his" homework, one who has bought the best possible stock and preferably the best bitch for kennels are built on their bitches. There are many facets to buying the right puppy or grown dog from a breeder. Explore the best procedure or buy him outright and get the best guarantee you can. Remember no litter is 100% perfect and a pup that looks super, "potential Champion material" can fall apart at 6 months. If you are buying for show and breeding; pay more and expect more. If you are only interested in a pet, guard, companion, obedience dog, don't be disappointed when you decide to "show" him he never gets above third place, but be aware that the pup that doesn't look quite as fantastic as his show potential litter-brothers and sister, can at a later time walk away with a Blue Ribbon.

Contact as many kennels as you can for your puppy, find out what lines are winning, what guarantees are given, what litters are expected. Decide what appeals to you; go to the shows and look al the Bouviers. What kind of temperament do you prefer - some lines are sharper than others - what size do you like - some lines run small, some larger. If you can not go to visit the kennel of your choice, call and write several times, and visit owners who have dogs from that kennel who do live near you. Wait your puppy should arrive, clean, bathed, docked, cropped, with all his papers in order and a small bear will tumble out of his crate to give you years and years of pleasure and pride. You'll have a BOUVIER, and they are something worth waiting for.

Deewal takes great pride in having brought many wonderful, good, kind people into the ranks of serious, dedicated Bouvier des Flandres Breeders and exhibitors.
