When records are broken or new records are set, you can bet that Deewal Kennels has something to do with the achievement, and the recent accomplishments in New Zealand by Mrs. Robyn van den Brink of Vanstavast Bouvier des Flandres Kennel is one for the record books.Mrs. Robyn van den Brink has the first Bouvier des Flandres frozen semen litters to be born in New Zealand, is the breeder of the First Bouvier des Flandres to go BEST IN SNOW in New Zealand, and the breeder of the first Australian champion to be exported to Australia from New Zealand which was sired by a dog in the United States. The first Best in Show Bouvier is NZ Ch. Bierlee Abraham, a three year old male bred by Mrs. van den Brink, sired by Ch. Brigadier Vanstavast and from Ch. Centaine Vanstavast who won the show November 14, 1998.
Mrs. van den Brink was looking to import new Bouvier des Flandres bloodlines into New Zealand and for her breeding in particular. Contacting Deewal Kennels, the arrangement was made with ICG to ship frozen semen to New Zealand rather than try to bring a Bouvier into the country with quarantine laws being so prohibitive. Deewal first tried to collect their major stud at the time, himself an import from Holland, Am. Can. Ch. Pal Paris Inca V.D. Duca Vallei ofa, but discovered a mild prostate problem eliminating him as a candidate. Instead, his son, Am. Can. Champion Deewal Quwinn ofa was collected and his semen was shipped to New Zealand without problems.
Robyn had a very eligible bitch for insemination and one straw was used for the breeding, resulting in two bitch puppies being born on July 23, 1997. One was named Vanstavast Breeze and the other was Ohh La La. As a puppy, Ooh La La was sold and exported to Australia to Mr. Peter Renwick of the Tweevanons Kennels. He raised the puppy and on January 17, 1998, the Australian National Kennel Council awarded her the Australian Championship. This is an accomplishment of continental proportions whereas the sire resided in the U.S., the litter was born on New Zealand and the bitch is now an Australian Champion.
The second bitch in the litter, kept by Robyn, met a tragic and untimely death. Very disheartened and heartbroken over the loss, it wasn't until two years later that Robyn used another straw, breeding NZ Ch. Bearpark Angie, in hopes of having another Qwuinn litter. She never dreamed that success would be so spectacular. This time, three pups, all quite golden fawn, two girls and a boy, were born on January 23, 1999. And have become the talk of New Zealand Bouvier circles. Robyn describes the color as 'caramel' and tells us that the fawn in New Zealand is quite prized and appreciated by judges and owners alike. It is quite unnatural it itself to have three fawns in one litter, but even more so if that is the total of the litter. Named Saxon, Silhouette and Sophia, these pups are destined to contribute greatly to the bloodlines in New Zealand by bringing in responsible European bred lines as well as the long established and highly acclaimed Deewal bloodlines that stand like a rock against time.
Frozen Semen from the Best in Show and Specialty winning Bouvier, Ch. Rothchild's Buckingham has been imported by Jacque Lieshot and is waiting for positive results, but otherwise there has been little interest or progress made in using frozen semen. This may all change now with the results of the efforts made by Mrs. Robyn van den Brink.
There have been several successful litters born in the United States using frozen semen, including a litter of 13, and Nancy Eliks reports that a litter of 8 pups were born on April 23, 1996 sired by Am. Can. Ch. Holiandia's Tarzan v.d. Koaten, TT.OFA. ovc and out of Ch. Lilith of Blackstone TT OFA. Of the eight pups, it is remarkable as two in the litter are Ch. Blackstone's General Chaos, TT, group placer, OFA (hips elbows, heart, and thyroid), Cerf, glaucoma clear and PenHipp (.34 and .36) and the other is Ch. Blackstone's What's Init For Me, Group Placing, OFA (hips, elbows, thyroid) Cerf and glaucoma tested. I am sure there are other frozen (and chilled) litter accomplishments and if so, I would like to hear about them and chronicle them for the history of the breed. Also if anyone has shipped semen abroad and had my success, do e-mail me and we will certainly add this information to the accomplishments of the breed.
