    The Rotary Club of Tacloban will be celebrating this coming August 20, its 51st year Charter Anniversary. It had its first meeting in the year our founder Paul Harris died in 1947. We would like to invite everyone to celebrate with us on this date.

    Tacloban City is the capital of the Province of Leyte and is the geographical center of the Eastern Visayas region in the Philippines. The city which started as a 'barrio' of the town of Basey in Samar, dates back to the spanish era. Its page in history was established when Gen. Douglas MacArthur landed in Tacloban, Leyte to liberate the Philippines in October 20, 1945. With him also landed President Sergio Osmeña who made the newly liberated Tacloban City the provisional capital of the Philippines.

    Tacloban is located in the Waray-Waray speaking region of the country and home to fun loving and highly educated population. English is spoken commonly here, courtesy of the American pre-war 'Thomasites' educators. Tacloban is the hub of a tourism destination which display beautiful landmarks, several beach destinations, pristine islands for the island hoppers and comfortable hotel accomodations both in Tacloban itself and Ormoc City on the other side of the island.

   1998, the Filipino people celebrates 100 years of independence from the Spain. This year heroes will be remembered and their lives extoled in a yearlong celebration in the arts, music and cinema. Come help us celebrate this momentuous event in our history this coming June 12, 1998 by signing a sister-club agreement with us.

    The original charter club bell was a gift of our mother club, the Rotary Club of Cebu. New members younger than the bell have to 'kiss' it to honor its importance to the club. This bell is still being used by our club during its regular meetings and it has retained its crisp and clear sound all these years.
