Winter Campout
March, 1998
Camp Split Rock, Ashburnham, MA (Nashua Valley Council)
One of Troop 424's most valuable assets, in terms of
recruitment, is its affiliated Cub Scouts, Pack 424. On at least
two occasions each year, Webelos from Pack 424 and Boy Scouts from the
troop camp out together. In this way, the Webelos get to meet the
boys in the Troop, and also get to see what is store for them in the next
couple of years, when they cross over the Bridge to Boy Scouts.
This year, the January campout was canceled on account
of a Nor'easter bearing down on New England for the weekend. Roads
in North Central Massachusetts were impassable, and it was decided to postpone
this campout. Thanks to Nashua Valley Council, we were able to re-book
our weekend for the President's weekend in March.
Given the opportunity to pitch a tent and sleep
outside, or bunk-in in the cabin, a couple of the Boy Scouts opted to stay
out, while all of the Webelos, and a couple of the other Boy Scouts (and
all the Adults) decided to stay in the cabin.
This was a fun weekend, with no scheduled activities.
Nothing like a good game of Magic outside on a wonderful day, and so Frank,
Mike, Mike, James, Darryl, Nick, and Bryan enjoy some good fresh air at
the picnic table just outside of the cabin. As nice as the weekend
was, however, it took some doing to keep the boys outside, and not hanging
around INSIDE the cabin. After the day was over, however, they realized
that this was good day to be outdoors.
Some of the boys decided to work on requirements.
This was the first opportunity in a while to work on requirements done
outdoors! Here, James and Mike work together on finishing off some
of the requirements for the Pioneering merit badge. How often do you get
to sit outside in shorts in the month of March in Massachusetts?
Of course, there was plenty of good food at this campout. Breakfast
on Saturday morning had French Toast, and some home-made donuts cooked
in the dutch oven. Here AJ, Tony and Andy show off thier cooking
prowess, as Mr. B. and James look on and enjoy.
What fun campout doesn't include some hiking and exploring. Here
Bryan and Darryl, along with Webelos Jeff and Eric enjoy the sun and great
weather out on the rocks behind the cabin.
