One expects nice people, who are helpful leaders, to be around forever...that is why it was a great shock, on May 4th, 2005, when most of Marietta was informed that Ansley Meaders had died of an apparent heart attack while preparing dinner. | ||
Former Marietta Mayor Ansley Meaders served as mayor for almost a decade:
being elected in 1993, she served two full terms which made her the third-longest
serving mayor in Marietta's history.
Ansley was a Marietta native, a 1963 graduate of Marietta High School, and a member of one of Marietta's oldest families. Neal Little, Ansley's father was the owner of Cobb Exchange Bank, that is now Sun Trust Bank. For twenty years Ansley pursued a career in banking, but decided to run for Mayor when Joe Mack Wilson, died in office. Shed loved the schools, and she thought as Mayor, perhaps she could help the school system. After her election in 1993, Ansley told em, "All my life, I have been primed for this job. This is what I am supposed to do." She did her job with great enthusiasm, just as she did in promoting the Marietta High School Class of 1963, by planning the high school reunions, and she helped the Marietta School Foundation by being a great fund raiser. The former mayor attended the University of Georgia, and was an enthusiastic Ga. Bull Dog fan, who loved to attend the games. She married Frank Meaders, an Marietta engineer. The couple had two children" Robert Meaders (a Marietta school teacher), and a daughter Mary Ansley Southerland. They had four grandchildren. The flag in Marietta were lowered to half-staff in Marietta, in the days following her death and during her funeral at first Presbyterian Church in Marietta on May 7th, where the flag was placed with the casket, and the casket was accompanied by and honor guard of policemen and fire fighters. Burial was in Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Marietta Schools Foundation, The American Heart Foundation, and the American Cancer Society for breast cancer. |
