The Jackie Smallwood ball field dedication
by the City of Marietta
Dedication Ceremony  of the John "Jackie" Smallwood ball field by the  Marietta High School  Class of 1963  Saturday July 25, 1998
455 Aviation Rd.
John "Jackie" Smallwood

Following graduation Jackie continued his education in Auburn University earning both B.S. and M.B.A. degrees.  In 1969 he entered the U.S. Air Force and became a fighter pilot joining the war in Southeast Asia.  While in service he earned the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross.
After returning home he was informed that he was being shipped back to Thailand.  Since the Paris Peace Accords had been signed, it seemed to be a routine assignment.  On June 16, 1973, Captain Smallwood was shot down in Cambodia, six months after the peace agreement had been signed.
