P. BUCKLEY MOSS
P. Buckley Moss (Pat) and I
P. Buckley Moss is my favorite artist. Not only is her art beautiful, she's also a beautiful person. I admire her and what she stands for. Early in her life it was discovered she was dyslexic. Eventually her artistic talents were discovered and she was enrolled in a school where they were finally encouraged and seriously nourished. In 1986, because of her learning disability and knowing the struggle young children go through she started the P. Buckley Moss Society.
Her husband's work to took them to Waynesboro in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It was here that she came to appreciate the quiet beauty of rural scenery and to know the picturesque and deeply religious Amish and Mennonite "plain" people. The Amish are a religious sect who still maintain many of the customs and beliefs of their forefathers who were early settlers. They are a sincere hardworking people, who live almost solely by farming, without the use or aid of modern conveniences and machinery. The horse and buggy still remains their main means of transportation. The Amish live close to the world of God and are surely a credit to the community in which they live. Pat uses a lot of Amish people in her paintings and paints a lot of buildings from Living History Farms in Des Moines and other Iowa locations and subjects.
I was a member of her society for about three years. One of the advantages was being able to purchase member only prints. I was able to purchase a couple of those prints. Also, hand-painted brooches came with membership. I've also received several prints as gifts.
