Cicadas Find a Home in Mid-Missouri

That high pitched wall of sound that you're hearing coming from the trees in Mid-Missouri isn't your ears playing tricks on you. The sound you are hearing are Cicadas, and they are everywhere this spring (1998). This year is somewhat of an anomaly for the red-eyed bugs. Two species of Cicadas are emerging at the same time. Both 13- & 17- year cycle Cicadas are hatching simultaneously, and this is an event that occurs only about every two hundred years.

In Columbia, MO, the incessant chorus of thousands of Cicadas can be heard non-stop all day long. It is truly an amazing event.
