What is a Cicada?

According to the Webster's New World Encyclopedia (1993 p. 183), a Cicada is "any of several insects of the family Cicadidae. Most species are tropical, but a few occur in Europe and North America. Young Cicadas live underground, for up to 17 years in some species. The adults live on trees, whose juices they suck. The males produce a loud, almost continuous, chirping by vibrating membranes in resonating cavities in the abdomen."
