John Usry was born around 1795 in Warren Co to William Usry and died 1856 Warren Co, GA. On Jan. 26, 1819 in Warren Co., GA he married Elizabeth Newsom who was born ca. 1800 Warren Co. and died ca 1880 Glascock Co., GA.
The Will of John Usry dated 11 Oct 1855 stated the following: To wife Elizabeth, all of certain lands except some sold to John L. Usry and some reserved for Ransom C. Usry on Beach Tree Creek. Sell other property, distribute to: son Daniel, $1000; dau. Elizabeth Johnson Melissy; son, Ransom C. Usry; dau. Sarah Ann Linny Sofrony; granddau. Gracy Wilcher Usry, $1000; son Francis M. Usry, guardian of minor son David L. Usry and dau. Gracy Wilcher Usry. Exec: wife Elizabeth. William was not mentioned in John's will. Proof was found in Warren County Minutes Book A 1858-1868, pp 50-51. The will of John Usry was contested by Francis, John, I.G., William, Ransom C. and Gracy as legal heirs of John Usry. Elizabeth Usry (wife) and Joshua were listed as executors. The will made no provision for John's minor children.
When Elizabeth died, her children still wanted to see her. They hired a man from Atlanta to build a metallic coffin with a glass window. The oxygen was removed from the coffin and the appropriate gases put in to preserve her. Betsy was laid to rest wearing her yellow silk shroud with her strings of pearls and was placed on the top floor of the house where she and her son lived. The son, Dr. Joshua Franklin Usry, who graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1852, kept her there about three months before her burial. Meantime, family and friends visited her. After she had been buried for twenty years, she was disenterred. She was a bit sallow, but appeared to be in good condition. Unfortunately, there is no marker for the grave which is now is Glascock Co., GA.
