Notes for William Gregg II:
William Gregg was known as "The Immigrant Friend" and met William Penn in the lead mines of Ireland when Wm Penn visited Waterford, Ireland in 1678. Penn converted many Scottish-Irish settlers to the Society of Friends. William Gregg was one of those converted by Penn.
William Gregg arrived in the U.S. sometime after OCT 1682 with the Colonial Friends Group. It is thought that he made the voyage in the ship "Caledonia" with William Hoge, sailing for Pennsylvania. They arrived at Upland, now Chester, Pennsylvania, with his wife and four small children.
William went down the Delaware River to Centerville between Brandywine and Red Clay Creeks. He was granted 200 acres of land in 1683 and was warranted 400 acres of land in 1684. William was known to have built a Log Cabin on a location called "Strand Milas" in 1684. He died when about 45 and was buried on his own plantation near Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.
In Albert Cook Myers book, "Immigration of Irish Quakers, we read that "Wm. & Ann Gregg came to America with the Dixon, Hollingsworth, Sharpley, etc. families, who came from the North of Ireland, probably County Armagh; William Gregg settled on a tract of 400 acres of land, in Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, surveyed to him 11-3-1685. He died ye 1st of ye 7th mo and was buried on his own plantation 1687.
Note in Josiah Gregg's (1823-1903) Family Bible Record states that
William Gregg was born in Scotland. He met William Penn in Lead Mines of
North Ireland and was converted by him to a Quaker. William came to the
Colonies in 1682. He died and was buried in July 1687 on his own plantation
near Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.

"John Gregg was 14 years old when he left Ireland and settled in
Delaware. He was married at Concord Friends Meeting (Delaware Quakers).
John was only 19 years old when his father died. His family continued
to live in the family home and keep possession of their land.
John was a serious, proud and capable youth. He was always a faithful
Friend and a busy person. In the summer of 1694, when 26 years old, he
built a two-story stone house and married Elizabeth Cooke at Concord
Friend's Meeting, November 11, 1694.
On 17 AUG 1702, John and Elizabeth bought more land and erected a
Grist Mill. At one time, John owned 5,700 acres of fine land along the
Brandywine River. John Gregg had seven children (3 girls & 4 boys)."
Myers says, "John Gregg of Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., yeoman, aged about 67 years, made a disposition about 1735 'that he has dwelt in said County about 51 yrs.'"
John's cousin by same name spelled Gregg as Greeg.

He married (2) ANN WOODNUT or DIXON. He married (1) MARGERY HINKEY 27-July-1725 in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle, North Carolina, daughter of HERMAN HINKEY and MARGERY.
Notes for WILLIAM GREGG:
Extract from "A Short History of John Henry Gregg's Family and their
Ancestors" by Elma Gregg Marshall:
"William lived all of his life in New Castle County, Delaware. He
inherited 200 hundred acres with the grist mill. William was an active
Friend. He became a miller on Red Clay Creek, having the only grist
mill within a radius of ten miles. In 1737, William and Margery Gregg
built a large brick house with walls two feet thick.
"This old house still stands and even today is in very good condition
due to the care that its present owner is giving it. It is in Ashland,
Delaware, not a town, but merely a fork in the roads, eight miles from
Wilmington. Two houses and a mill are all that is there.
"The house is of colonial style of the 'center-hallway' type. There
are four windows and the door on the first floor front, and five windows
on the second floor on the front side. There is a fair sized porch at
the front entrance. The house and the rooms are quite large as was
needed for the families in those days. The walls are entirely of brick,
alternating red and black which gives it a clean and neat appearance.
The joists dividing the first and second floors were extended through
the wall and a coping built all the way around the house, which adds
much to the appearance. While the roof and some trimmings have had to
be replaced, the walls are as perfect as when first built. It is really
remarkable that the bricks and mortar show no signs of wear or crumbling
after two hundred years of exposure to the elements. This shows the
quality of materials and workmanship and care taken in building at that
time. It is thought the bricks were made at the 'brick pond' which was
at one time about 200 yards west of the house.
"In the gable in the attic is an inset of bricks in which had been
cast letters and date arranged in this manner:
G
W M
1737
These are the initials of William and Margery Gregg who built the house
in 1737. Each letter is about eight inches across and extends an inch
or more from the wall. They were actually cast in the brick and time
has not marred them at all.
"A large stone kitchen with two large fireplaces with hooks and irons
and dutch-ovens for cooking were built on the back. The kitchen is
still in use although, the fireplaces are not used now and a small
window has been built in where a dutch-oven once was.
"The foundation is of stone and as solid as when built two hundred
years ago. A large arch approximately twelve feet across was built
to support two fireplaces and chimneys near the middle of the back
wall. Not a break can be seen in this masterpiece of masonry - it
would support many tons of weight. Right under the arch was a
large pit, probably seven or eight feet deep, which was used for
cool storage of foods, etc. The pit was filled in recently, but
the outlines are still there. Some of the original joists supporting
part of the main floor are still there. These joists are really
hand-hewed 'logs', about ten inches square - quite different from
what is used today.
"The interior of the house was almost completely burned out
February 20, 1934 but was rebuilt quite like the original. Two of
the window frames in the front wall escaped the fire and so are
still in place. These wooden frames have been exposed to the
weather for two hundred years and are still solid and sound. The
frames are joined at the corners with wooden pegs. In rebuilding
the house after the fire, the carpenters found the walls in perfect
alignment which again shows the quality of workmanship and materials
which was put into the walls and foundation. Also the original
limestone doorstep at the front entrance is still intact and shows
very little wear. It is a truly remarkably well-built house.
"Near the house, and in back, is a stone "meat house" which was
used for smoking and keeping meat. Some of the old iron hooks on
which meat was hung are still in place. There is also a large
"ice pit" for storing ice cut in wintertime for summer use. This
is now covered by a frame building and of course has not been used
for years.
"In 1944 Mr. Thomas Mullin, a sociably, agreeable man around
sixty years, owned this 'Gregg' house and was living in it. His
father bought the place in 1879 and Thomas Mullin inherited it in
1917. He has a record of transfer of the property from the time
of William Penn.
"William Gregg, builder of the above-described brick house,
made a will indicating that his land should be divided thus:
Harmon to have land on north side of Red Clay Creek, and William
to have land on south side of Red Clay Creek. The grist mill was
to go to the younger sons, one of whom was Jacob-(our line of
ancestors)."
