League and Sea Cadet Boot Camp
Atlantic Sea Bee Battalion

What is Boot Camp?
Apart from unit drills, recruit training is the cadet's first experience with military routine and discipline. Recruit training takes place at Navy/Coast Guard Recruit Training Centers with active duty instructors, or at selected Navy facilities with qualified NSCC leaders. Cadets learn basic Navy subjects, elementary seamanship, basic damage control, and quarters maintenance while participating in extensive physical training.

For many cadets Recruit Training is the first time away from home. Physical training is demanding and discipline is strict. CO's must brief cadets and their parents/guardians thoroughly regarding training activities, and must screen cadets carefully to ensure that they are both physically and psychologically prepared.

Cadets attend Boot Camp twice: once as a League Cadet for one week, and then again for 2 weeks as a Sea Cadet. This is more of an "age" based requirement than a rank requirement as an older child who qualifies otherwise may just attend the 2 week Sea Cadet Boot Camp.

To qualify for training cadets must:

  1. Be enrolled in the NSCC a minimum of six weeks prior to the start of their assigned "Boot Camp."
  2. Be physically qualified for such training, as certified by a physician and pass the NSCC physical readiness test (PRT).
  3. Complete the BMR, Chapters 1-3, in NAVEDTRA 12043 (1992) or Chapters 1, 5,6,9, and 10 in NAVEDTRA 12018 (1999) (See Action Letter 6-00)and have all required uniforms listed in Appendix E of the NSCC Escort Officer Handbook.
  4. Be 14 years of age prior to 1 September of the calendar year attending summer training (or by commencement of the training camp if conducted during the winter Christmas Holidays), unless a "former" League Cadet who is 13 years of age, has successfully completed League Cadet Orientation Training scheduled by NHQ, and is considered "mature" enough by his/her CO to be accepted into the Sea Cadet Training Program.

Are there further training requirements?
After completing Boot Camp, the Sea Cadet must complete 2 weeks of advanced training per year, 5 days of which must be continuous and "live aboard"; the other 5 days can be taken throughout the year and many times are accumulated through FEX (Field Exercise) or other training exercises.

Staff Cadets for Boot Camp
To provide the opportunity to develop leadership skills and supplement the training staff, NHQ will assign qualified senior cadets to recruit and selected advanced training programs. Cadets will be assigned on a ratio of no more than 1 to 10: one staff cadet for every ten trainees (primarily at NSCC Boot Camps or NLCC Orientation). Female cadets will not be assigned to staff unless a female escort officer is available. Staff cadets should be mature, graduates of NSCC Leadership Programs, and complete at least one other NSCC advanced training program ashore or afloat. In nominating cadets for staff assignments, unit CO's must observe the following guidelines:

  • Only cadet petty officers (E-4 or higher) will be assigned to duties involving direct supervision of trainees. Cadets in grades E-3 will perform administrative and watchstanding duties only.
  • Cadets should not serve back-to-back consecutive tours except as specifically authorized by NHQ, nor may cadets who have just completed NSCC recruit training "roll over" to staff duty at NLCC recruit or similar indoctrination training.
  • NLCC cadets may not serve as Staff Cadets.
  • The CO of the Training Camp must approve all staff cadet requests for training.

Medical Restrictions
Medications, shelf or prescription are not permitted at Recruit Training, per NSCC Information Letter 9-94 and the backside of the NSC-22. In particular, asthma medication, Ritalin and pain medications (Tylenol, aspirin) are prohibited.

If a cadet requires the regular use of a prescription medication, it is advisable for the cadet to miss training. Boot camp is a somewhat stressful environment. Discontinued use of a required medication for the purposes of meeting Recruit Training requirements is highly unadvised; unethical, and will possibly cause serious harm to the cadet

Any recruit found bringing medications to boot camp will have them confiscated by the Medical Officer. The Medical Officer and the Commanding Officer shall then determine if there are grounds for dismissal.

Any injury or condition requiring the use of an orthopedic brace is considered a preexisting medical condition.

The Medical Officer will treat all minor injuries and administer over the counter medications. There will be medical personnel on call 24 hrs. a day.

In the event of an injury or illness requiring an MD, the base clinic or the Local hospital will be utilized. Be aware that cadets that are taken to the hospital may be asked for private insurance information. NOTE: NSCC ACCIDENT/ILLNESS INSURANCE POLICY IS ACCIDENT ONLY AND DOES NOT COVER PRE-EXISTING INJURIES!

"Sick Call" will be open from reveille to taps unless it is an emergency.
