Descendants of John Duffey

Generation No. 1

1.We do not know whenJOHN1 DUFFEY died. He married (1) MARY HALL DEEBLE March 17, 1796. She was born in England, and died March 17, 1808 in Alexandria, VA. He married (2) MARY KINSELL September 14, 1808.

Notes for JOHN DUFFEY:

It's not known where John Duffey came from, though family rumor has it as Wales where his family supposedly owned a tin mine. What is known is that a ship left Cornwall in 1790 with a John Duffield onboard. When it landed, a John Duffey debarked.

John Duffey was a mason with membership in Fredricksburg Lodge #4.

John Duffey was a silversmith but normally made his living as a combmaker. This was not unusual for a silversmith back in Colonial times as most combs were often fashioned with silver. In 1793, John Duffey crafted from silver a trowel which was used by George Washington to lay the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol. This same trowel was also used to lay cornerstones at the Smithsonian, U.S. Supreme Court, National Cathedral, Library of Congress, Thomas Jefferson Memorial and many other places of note. It is now on display at the George Washington Memorial Masonic Temple in Alexandria Virginia.

Notes for MARY HALL DEEBLE:

It is said that Lady Mary Hall married her first husband, Mr. Deeble against her parent's wishes as he was from the working class. She bore him two children before he decided to come to Virginia to make his way. He went ahead of her and later sent for her and her two children. On the voyage to Virginia Mary met John Duffey and they became close friends. When the ship docked at Bel Haven, which is what Alexandria was known as then, Mary Deeble found that her husband had recently died. The community felt much sympathy for the beautiful widow and found her a position as a teacher in a girl's school.

Notes for MARY HALL DEEBLE and

We know John Duffey spent his earlier years in Virginia in Fredricksburg before he moved to Alexandria. John renewed his friendship with the lovely widow Mary and in 1796 they were wed.

Notes for JOHN DUFFEY and MARY KINSELL:

In 1808 JOHN DUFFEY advertised that his wife Mary had eloped and disappeared with many objects of value including plates of silver and gold.

We don't know when John Duffey died or where he was married. My father was always told that he was buried on the grounds of the old Presbytarian Meeting House in Alexandria, though we have found no records. Another family story has John Duffey leaving Alexandria at some point and taking his young family to Philadelphia. After his death his family would have returned to Alexandria.

2. GEORGE HURD2 DUFFEY (JOHN1) was born September 11, 1798 in Alexandria, VA, and died February 1852 in Alexandria, VA. He married ROSINA LOTZ EHLERS May 9, 1819, daughter of JOHANN LOTZ and SUSANNAH HARTSHORNE. She was born October 1799 in Alexandria, VA, and died May 12, 1897 in Alexandria, VA.

Notes for GEORGE HURD DUFFEY:

In 1824 George Hurd Duffey was keeping a tavern on Royal Street and in March 1827 he tendered his services to the public as a mechanic. He was accustomed to work in iron, steel, brass, silver, and gold. His shop was on Royal, one door north of Cameron Street in Alexandria. Duffey advertised himself as a lock and whitesmith who accepted groceries and dry goods for work at cash prices. In 1829 he did bellhanging, lock and whitesmithing and in 1830 he made surgeon's and dentist's instruments, and shoemaker's tools.

Notes for ROSINA LOTZ EHLERS:

On the death of her mother and father, Roseanna/Rosina was adopted by Johann Christian Ehlers, landscape gardener at Mt. Vernon. He was a graduate apprentice of the Royal Garden at Montbrilliant and had been issued a certificate "in the name of George III".

As a baby she was brought at his request to the bedside of George Washington. Never having his own children he was never the less enamored of them. He held her not long before he died.

At the time of her death, Rosina was the oldest resident of Alexandria. This is her obituary.

Mrs. Rosina Elizabeth Duffey died at 4 o'clock p.m. yesterday, May 12, 1897, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. F.G. Swaine, on 105 S. Royal Street. Mrs. Duffey was the mother of the late Major George Duffey, Mrs. Charles Hall, of Petersburg, Va.; Mrs. Kate E. Wills, of Auburn, Ala,; Mrs. E. S. Duffey, of Middleburg; Mrs. S. S. Sipple, Mrs. Stephen Swain, and Mrs. F.G. Swaine, of this city, her children, surviving her.

Mrs. Rosina Duffey was born at the Emerson homestead in Wst End in October 1799, and was baptized in the old Presbyterian Church on Fairfax Street, December 3, 1799; and at her death was 97 years and 7 months old. A few months ago Mrs. Rosina Duffey fell and brok her arm, which healed rapidly, but shortly afterward fell and dislocated her hip, since which time she was confined to her bed. In early life Rosina's mother died, and Rosina's father, Johann Lotz, moved to New Orleans, La., where he shortly afterward died. She was then adopted by Mr. Johann Christian Ehlers, who was landscape gardener at Mount Vernon for Gen George Washington. At the age of 16, Rosina Lotz was married to Jacob Fortney, Jr. at Mt. Vernon under a large chestnut tree that stood in front of what is now the post office at that place, and in which Mr. Ehlers lived. Judge Bushrod of Washington gave her away. Jacob Fortney, Jr. lived but a few years, leaving Rosina with two children. When about 20 years of age Rosina married George Hurd Duffey. The fruits of this union were, besides those mentioned above, Mr. John Duffey, of this place, and Mrs. Rosina Dowell of Raleigh, N.C. who died some years ago. Mrs. Rosina Duffey was a consistent member of St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal church, of this city, up to the time of her death, having become a member of the church in early life. Some few years ago when Rosina's memory was good it was a treat for her grandsons to listen to her recitals of happenings in this city and at Mt. Vernon. She had a wide and extensive acquaintance in this city and in Washington, all of whom will regret to learn of her demise, which occurred at the advanced age of 97 years. The funeral will take place from the residence of Mr. F.G. Swaine, on Royal Street, Friday evening, Rev. P.P. Phillips officiating. The deceased leaves forty grandchildren, ninety-five great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, representing the family in ten States in the Union. A few days prior to Gen. Washington's death, Mrs. Duffey, then an infant, was, at his request, carried to his bedside by her mother, Susanna Lotz, who was visiting Mr. Ehlers at the time.

Generation No. 3

3. GEORGE3 DUFFEY (GEORGE HURD2, JOHN1) was born April 6, 1820 in Alexandria, VA, and died July 10, 1896 in Alexandria, VA. He married SARAH CATHERINE STEELE July 1, 1845 in Washington D.C., daughter of HORATIO NELSON STEELE and MARY RAY. She was born April 10, 1828 in Alexandria, VA, and died September 22, 1890 in Alexandria, VA.

Notes for GEORGE DUFFEY:

The second George Duffey advertised as a watchmaker in Alexandria and was appointed Commissioner of Revenue for the city.

In 1850 George Duffey was the captain of the Mechanical Artillery, a volunteer militia unit. The Mechanical Artillery along with the Alexandria Rifleman and the Mount Vernon Guards were loosely organized as the 175th Regiment. In 1857 Captain Duffey was elected as major. Major Duffey gathered members of his unit, now known as the Alexandria Artillery, and was in attendance guarding the jail with two of their guns when John Brown was hanged after his uprising at Harper's Ferry.

As war broke out across the land he entered the Confederate army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

During the war he succeeded in keeping the town records of Alexandria intact, including the surveyor's map of the town made by George Washington when he laid it out in 1748 by burrying them on the grounds of Wise's Tavern.

Undoubtedly what George Duffey is most noted for is the pair of spurs he made from silver for General Robert E. Lee. The day after the 2nd Battle of Manassas, Lee's prized horse, Traveller was startled by a volley and threw him. Lee broke some of the bones in his right hand disabling him to such an extent that he was compelled to ride in an ambulance for the bulk of the Maryland campaign. When the army returned to Virginia Lee sent for Major George Duffey and asked for a loan of a pair of spurs as he had lost his own. Major Duffey Lent him some and told him he would have a pair made for him. George gathered the material he could find in garrison and fashioned a pair of spurs from silver for General Lee. When the spurs were presented to the general several English gementlemen, visitors to the Army of Northern Virginia were in attendance and seemed very deeply interested in the unique beauty of the gift. When asked if they had been imported General Lee responded, "Ah! gentlemen, you think we are poor rebels and barbarians. You make a mistake. They were not only made in the Confederacy, but here on this field, with the rough tools we use in repairing artilery and small arms."

The spurs have been described as made of pure silver, broad, flat, and sloping to the center. The heels formed to represent the head and neck of a swan, evidenced artistic workmanship and skill in design. They were arranged for the use of either of four sets of rowels, the teeth of which ranged respectively, five, eight, sixteen, and thirty-two--each set being of different colored metal: gold, straw, pale blue, and dark blue. By means of a small screw the general was enabled to use either set at pleasure, without inconvenience of any sort. The straps were of the finest buff leather procurable, with mountings and buckles of solid silver. A neat mahogany box, tastefully lined with fine blue velvet, containing a small screw-driver, manufactured for it, completed this outfit.

The spurs belong to and can be seen at Lee Chapel at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. They were worn by General Robert E. Lee at the surrender at Appamatox.

After the war years, George Duffey was again elected Commissioner of Revenue for the city of Alexandria.
