What a puzzle this family presents. There were two William & Sarah Jolletts living in Greene County during the same time. Even though we have studied the census records to try to determine which family was which, it's impossible to say. In the 1850 census, William Sampson, the miller, was living next door to James Madison Marsh, nephew of Sarah Jollett. Since families tended to live close to one another, we might conclude that our Sarah was married to the miller. However, in that same census, another of Sarah Jollett's nephews, John, was living in the household of the other Sarah & William Sampson, the wheelwright. Both William & Sarah Sampsons seem to have a connection to the Jolletts. So until we can be sure which one is Sarah JOLLETT Sampson's line, we will present both as we know them. If you descend from either of these lines, please contact Wendy or Mary Jollette.
Sarah JOLLETT (b.c. 1794 Orange County, VA) & William SAMPSON (b. c. 1787, Orange County, VA,) m. 1 Jan. 1809, Orange County, VA possible son of John & Lucy SAMPSON

There is a town named Sampson in Augusta County, Virginia, and in correspondence with the poster, Mr. Alexander Yancy Sampson, I secured the following history. His grandfather was William Sampson, who married a Sarah Sampson. He died aged 97 years, and had five children: Bluford Marshall, Franklin, Peachie, Virginia, and Marie.
Bluford Marshall Sampson, son of William and Sarah, married Jennette peterfish. He died in 1892, aged 81 years. His children were Layton Milton, S. Elizabeth, Margaret A., Joseph B., Mary Ann, and Alexander Yancy.
Layton Milton Sampson, son of Bluford and Jennetta, married Sarah R. Humphreys, and has eight children: Alice, Cora, Lillie, John A., Mollie, Nettie, Walter, and Howard, who is in the U.S. Army.
Alexander Yancy Sampson, son of Richard [sic.] and Jennetta, married Mary Jane McAusland, and had six children: Perry Lee, William Yancy, David Glenn, Charles Alexander, Hugh Bluford, and Joseph Franklin.
Mr. Alexander Y. Sampson, has been a merchant at Harriston, Augusta County, Virginia for 28 years. He had the post office of Sampson established and managed it until it was discontinued in 1910 and removed to Harriston only a few miles distant. Mr. Alexander Sampson thinks his grandfather, William, came from Scotland to this country. William settled first in Greene County, then moved to Albemarle County and finally located in Augusta County, where he died (pp. 218-219). |

1. There must be at least 3 William & Sarah couples: William Sampson & Sarah Coleman; William Sampson & Sarah Sampson; William Sampson & Sarah Jollett.
2. The 1810 marriage is between William Sampson JR and Sarah Sampson who was daughter of William Sampson SR. Assuming (and praying!) these were not siblings marrying, there were 2 William Sampson Seniors -- UNLESS the "Jr" and "Sr" suffixes were added to distinguish these two men, a custom of the time which did not necessarily denote a family relationship.
3. The indenture of 1798 assigns 50 acres where James Jollett lives to William Sampson. The 1850 census shows William & Sarah (family #211 - the miller) living on 50 acres. This would argue that this is most likely Sarah Jollett. However, this William would not have been old enough to buy land in 1798, so there appears to be a generation gap here.
4. The William Sampson of the death record could be William, the miller. He gave his property to his wife and children (named William J., Nancy, Cynthia, Mary and Martha) in 1850. In the 1860 census Sarah Sampson is the Head of Household suggesting that William has died.
5. If #4 is so, then this William could be the son of William Sampson & Sarah Coleman. However, this William & Sarah supposedly moved away.
6. The William Sampson mentioned in the death record was 65 yrs old, so he could not be the father of Bluford, Franklin, Peachie, Virginia, and Marie. That William lived to be 97.
7. If Alexander Yancy Sampson was correct that his grandfather came to America directly from Scotland, and that he married Sarah Sampson, then we could possibily eliminate family #121 altogether as a candidate for a Jollett lineage.
